Barriers are pointless in this game
They cost money, and they break down so fast, and when they do breakdown it's extremely risky you could be facing tens of thousands in refunds. It just never makes any sense to build barriers when you can instead close the animals in with scenery items and terrain, which never break down.

They do not break down fast if you ave them checked once a month.

Engineers are expensive, and they can get stuck, so it's also unreliable.

Mine never get stuck if I give them a work zone they just go along and do their job. I am sorry are your getting stuck on paths.

Oh god, people here are beyond stupid. Of course you don't have this problem if you just hire a bunch of engineers.
The point is, that you could've saved those money.

So what do you use money for? I have over 5 million. Never going to use that!

no problem with engineers, 1 for 3 or 4 habitats with visit all 6 months. And for money? no problem at all with a good zoo layout...

Me: hey guys this new method is better
You: But the old method isn't that bad
Me: But the new one is still better
You: But the old method isn't that bad

It's irrelevant if barriers are very bad or just a little bit bad, it's not as good as scenery.

There are easier ways to piss off money without having the risk of some bug happening and an engineer getting stuck, and your lions escape. Plus you can still have as many engineers as you want, just minus the risk.

I get your point, but if I imagine being a guest in a zoo, I wouldn't really care how often they told me that lion won't be able to climb the rocks they put as natural barrier, I'd rather have a nice big wall around it's habitat. That's why I personally still like barriers. :)

There are scenery item walls....

You can actually just use real barriers even and set them to be not-a-habitat barrier in the options for barriers. Those won't break down. Then enclose the animals with the null barrier just outside of it.

I do this for shy animals all the time. I build a non-habitat barrier with one-way glass inside the enclosure and have the real barrier behind all the visitors. I even have the keepers coming from that direction sometimes, and have just a small access corridor past the non-habitat wall for them.

using non-barriers as barrier and setting the real barriers as "not-a-habitat" ... another example that totally shows how the game design is flowed .. that's ridiculous. Yes, that brings freedom. But that's ridiculous.
DementedGnome Dec 5, 2019 @ 3:07pm
Are you using strong enough barriers for the animal? If you have elephants in a grade 2 barrier for example, they're going to wear down insanely fast.
NanoGrrl Dec 5, 2019 @ 6:16pm
I trained up my mechanics, one for every two or so habitats, which they check monthly. Now my breakouts are minimal. Funnily enough, the worst case I had were some Houdini pronghorn babies who were apparently finding invisible holes in a wooden barrier--because I had a water feature a bit too close. I guess it sloped in proximity to the barrier and the little Dickenses kept getting out! So frustrating, but so funny. Baby antelopes trotting around in the crowds, nobody noticing them. XD
