Donation boxes are one of the main incomes for your zoo.
Guests will donate by viewing a specific animal, and than will attempt to find a close donation box to them. For style, you don't need too many in a single habitat. But making sure you have at least 1 to every pen is a good rule and makes tonnes of money.
Experiment around.
I put usually 1 donation bin per exhibit/group of exhibits in a very centralized spot. And I'll do 1 bin per small habitat with small viewing. Otherwise, it's one at the entrance to the viewing and one at the exit to the viewing and sometimes a third in the center. Never had money issues following this method. I also take numerous building breaks so as to not keep the zoo constantly changing and constantly losing money from constructing. Nothing like making 15k donations off a small group of peafowls and one or two exhibit animals.
