If you have a Gold Appeal animal with good Genes mate with with another Gold Appeal good Genes animal you simply have higher chances of having a good offspring, it's not guaranteed to always happen but the chances raise.
The age of the animal will effect the Fertility also.
So basically, the older the animal the weaker the offspring or so. This is not Guranteed or proven but it's what I have noticed with my animals that I breed for Gold Appeal only and ofcourse good Genes.
I don't have a clear answer for your question, but I do know that it's all random.
I'm pretty sure you know what you are doing and because everything has been going well so far it's weird to see problematic offsprings come to life. But that's life for ya..
I guess it's possible it's just a extended run of bad luck. My latest pair of cubs had good ferility. I'll keep more of an eye on the ages, shouldn't be a problem as I usually only breed most pairs twice before trading or releasing them.
I think the older the Animal the more conservation stars it earns. I just keep the Mother and Father. Release thier offspring, and replace the Mother and Father when they are about to die and start the process again. This eliminates inbreeding too.
