Stuck in tutorial -- gate for ostrich habitat

I am stuck trying to place the gate in the ostrich habitat. All around the perimeter, the messages say "obstructed" or "outside placement area." Did anyone else have problems with this? Any help would be appreciated.

There are a couple tools that can change it.

in the bottom right corner, there should be a tab with 2 pages, one of those has "Flatten terrian" and "allow tunneling". You should switch those on/off, depending on what you want, some barriers slip 'underground' and do not allow for door pathways to be connected. Flattening the terrian corrects that.

I found the tab and the options but both are grayed out and cannot be turned on. What am I missing?

I'm having the same problem a year later and can't find a solution anywhere... Did you ever solve it?

-edit- never mind, found it!! For those still stuck: you need to face the habitat from the path, so if the walls are blocking your view of the path, turn your camera (middle mouse button).

Didn't work though. But I figured out what my problem was, just edited my post :)
