Can't seem to rotate objects

Just downloaded the game a few days ago and am trying to find my feet. Steep learning curve! My main problem is that I cannot seem to rotate objects consistently - sometimes I manage by accident, but I cannot repeat it. So for example, I am still in the Goodwin House tutorial. I was able to rotate the Keeper Hut and the power station to go with it, somehow, but I can't seem to rotate the tigers' shelter. I am pressing z and the left mouse button and using the trackpad. A green circle does appear, but rotation does not happen. Have I found a bug or am I doing something wrong?

I find the tutorials tend to limit you randomly for no reason.

Another way to rotate is to press x and use advanced move.

And the reason the keeper hut and power stwtion both rotated is they wherein a group

Try tapping 'Z' while holding the Tiger shelter, that should rotate 90 deg at a time (how you can rotate an object, freely or by 90 deg increments, depends whether the object is in a group or not). When you pick up the shelter check if there is an orange box at top right of screen, if there is this will limit rotation to 90 deg, click exit on the box to get free rotation. I would highly recommend searching You Tube for some building tutorials as you are a beginner, I found them very helpful and learned a lot. Paulsley has a whole series of simple tutorials on most things you will need to know at some point in the game.
