Each animal shows its base fame points. The higher it is, the more attention it will get.
Once you get going, it's honestly hard to screw it up. The game isn't that difficult once you figure out the start.
Don't go afk for an hour with all your animals making babies, and you're pretty much good to go.
You need stuff to draw them over there, I haven't quiet worked out what causes the visitors to ignore habitats but they straight up ignore my elephants but walk across the zoo to my hippos. I think it might be variety and am going to put some exhibits by my elephants, if not ill try shops and if that fails I'll try being confused some more.
There is a ( very boring though) way around this... exhibits. A long grid path from the entrance towards the middle of the park, ending with some staff pathing to your staff buildings. Line the guest path with exhibits, and pop a donation bin by each one with an education board. 1 keeper per 6 exhibits, keep breeding on and sell / rotate the babies, and you'll end up swimming in money after 10-15 years of that. On the plus side, a mechanic can be doing research to unlock some of the building stuff.
I do this for each of my breeder zoos, only I go one step beyond, and mass build the mechanic workshops and research huts, and get all the disease and mechanic research out the way during this phase. You might go negative income but you'll fire a lot of the staff used for research, bringing you back positive in the end. It's a pain, but worth it, in my opinion.
