can you group objects

so lets say i build a wall from ten little pieces, can i goup this together somehow so i can just click and paste it?

Yes, marquee it and save as blueprint.

Right, But when you place them they are still in a bunch of pieces. Is there a way to group the items together once they're placed so it remains one big object?

You can have them all as an edit group, but not all as a physical item. You can move the entire edit group as one though, and duplicate the entire thing for pasting walls along a path etc.

When you select an object, there's a button in its window that you can click to start adding items the the first one's "group," so they will all register as a single unit when you're finished. Don't remember what the button is called...
