Water as a barrier
Hello,

i heard that water can act as a barrier for some animals. Where do i see to which of them this applies? I dont see it in the Zoopedia. Im probably blind. Thx for your help

Kind Regards,

I'm not actually sure, to be honest, I've seen everything from zebras to hippos swim... I ASSUME elephants can't swim, but I might be very surprised!

For the record, you can do this for any animal by making the terrain on the far side of the water steep enough that they can't climb out, if you just want it for aesthetics. :D

The zoopedia tells you if the animal has water requirements so it can swim or not. You can also put barriers down after making the holes for water but BEFORE filling it, so you have a fence in the water area if you are worried.

If you know they cannot swim just use the NULL barrier to draw a line denoting an area you know they cannot cross to act as a barrier wall.

This works not just with water but with constructed buildings/structures and geoscaping as well.

Elephants love to swim =)

They also show a natural water space requirement in their zoopedia page too.

Problem is with animals that can swim but don't have water requirements, like Grizzlies for example.
Here's hoping they add a "Water can act as barrier: yes/no" or "can swim" note in the Zoopedia at some point.
EDIT: Or something about water depth requirement for barrier.

Most animals can swim so it doesn't work as a barrier.

you can build an invisble barrier in the barrier tabs. The tooltip states that this is meant for natural blockades like water.

Just make the barriee side steep enough that they cant exit the water on that side.

Also it works for lemurs and red pandas

All you have to do is make sure that the side of the path is unaccountable. just like my screens. My moat is not very wide, and a bit deeper ... Try out in sandboxmode. there nothing can happen to you :) There you can test as much and build as you want what is possible and what not :)

Not even one Elephant escaped :)
If the Visitorway is HIGH enough and the space between ground and way (bridge) blockes with stones, this will work also for Lions or Tigers..... they can jump over the Waterbarriage. But Only if the other side is too "low"... they can jump WIDE.. but not high enough..
I test these thiings always in sandbox mode :)

Intriguing! You'd think not with all that weight, but... If their muscles can carry the weight, I suppose it makes sense that they could propel it too.

I think you still need a barrier of some kind, even the invisible one, for the game to understand that it is a complete habitat with barrier enclosure and gate.

Apes doesn’t swim so like gorillas and lemur and so on.

Hi, there is a colormap for the area animals can reach and cross. Just check it to see if you need to make your sea deeper or not.
