Does removing an alpha from a group of animals have any consequences?
I want to sell the current alpha of my group of african wild dogs to have a better male take over and breed. Does this work? Or will it mess up the group if the alpha is taken out?

Nope works fine, I have done it. If you remove the alpha male a new one will become the alpha.

I have some wolves that I had the same questions with. I had a wolf pack of five adults, 3 males, 2 females. Once the alphas got older, the younger wolves fought and won control of the pack. Since the two alphas were now siblings, I took out the alpha male and tried introducing a new male wolf. At some point the new male and the last original male fought, but the new one lost, making the other original male the alpha. So I had to remove him from the pack too, which made the new wolf the alpha.

So I would say if you want a new alpha, you might have to let go of the other animals of that same gender to make sure that the new one can actually become the alpha.
