EDIT: unity walked a lot of this garbage back, and it no longer applies to kingdom
This is very very very bad situation! :-(
its like "for the king" nice game design killed by very bad engine choise.
j/k, thats not feasible for a dev team this size. even if they pick godot or something that supports C#, very little code would likely be reusable. the game engine isnt just a graphics library you sprinkle on top, its the language, apis, environment and tools that you use to build the whole game, and none of them play nicely with others.
1) sneaky! engine fees to develop a game are no longer up-front. unfixed, surprise costs arbitrarily far in the future are difficult to plan for.
2) retroactive! this fee is not something devs agreed to when they built existing games, but will somehow still be bound by
3) secret! the fee is determined by UNITY, based on UNITY's metrics, and devs have to trust the backstabbing ash holes
4) dangerous! it enables trolls to install-bomb a game and drive up fees for the devs
5) unfair! fee is unrelated to profit game devs make, due to discounts, multi-installs, etc. there is no simple way devs can pass this fee on to users.
i could keep going, but non-game-devs can just take the word of EVERY GAME DEV EVERYWHERE when they say this is awful
Yeah I get that the entire game needs to be rewritten if they have to move and I didnt mean to imply that they could completely swap game engines like lego.
I would gladly support noio and Licorice if they started the work to port all of the Kingdom games away from Unity as things are getting worse day-by-day.
It is in the best interest of our favorite game devs not get stuck here and give up. Else Unity is going to bankrupt every dev blindsided by the TOS and pricing changes.
