boat in norse lands - can't build after initial 8 coins

I pay 8 coins to start building the boat but then can't do anything beyond that. Is this a bug or do I need to do something new? I have the Linux version.

Oh. It.. seems to have progressed on its own. I still can't put any extra money in. Hmm.

Now it's finished and I don't really undertand why. Is buying shields something to do with it? The head statue? I was sometimes able to put coins in the boat and sometimes not. I guess it will become clearer later. I am now on island 2.

In the base game the boat is mostly free in the first island, you just had to pay the 8 coins and wait for it to be built, then launch the boat.

Is that what's going on in Norse Lands?

Yes, same thing in Norse Lands. On the first island you just have to pay once and wait for the builder magic to happen! If you were ever able to put coins into it, it might be because some Greed came and stole a part or two.

Ah it may be a very long time since I did island 1 in the base game! I've mostly been doing challenge islands for months. Thanks.
