add peer to peer to this game
me and friend have been trying to play this game but we can't set up a server and since devs won't let us simply make a server we just want a simple peer to peer or other ways of connecting and playing

Can we get Peer to peer lobby hosting?
Not sure how difficult implementation is but I'm baffled its the end of 2023 and this still isn't a thing.

I don't see this happening, and there's also no real good reason to have it either. While it allows for servers to be made quickly, but it will have issues that Im really not comfortable with.

The biggest one is that of user safety, if something like GTA Online was to be followed, user's IPs not being secured is a real security risk. There is a reason that after the mid to late 2000s P2P has been mostly phased out for a Dedicated Server which can securely protect user's IPs, allows for better rule and VSR enforcement, and most importantly, fun server mods.

If you want to host a session of SL on your computer, download the SCP SL Dedicated Server, port forward that port to allow the server to see players, and you're off to go (although it wont appear on the server list)

I'm having the issue of not being able to port forward due to my isp provided router being somewhat limited when it comes to configuration (there is no port forward option for some reason). So is there really no foreseeable easier way to just invite friends through Steam and play?

Unfortunately not. You can try asking your friends if they are able to setup a port forward for an SL server, if you have 5 dollars to spare you can grab an EXILED Hosting Server[www.exiled.host] and you can get it up and running for a month and see if its worth justifying it for the future. I would advise against using ZAP Hosting or Shockbyte for SL servers as ZAP Hosting has some really odd limitations (mainly in regards to player limits) and Shockbyte clears any mods you try to use on server start which might be useful to have for some fun enjoyment.

Well that's a bummer, we used to play a lot but since I am the only one willing to set up a dedicated server this game went off the list of our party games. Thankfully Lethal Company got our back right now as a replacement (for now). Thanks for the info.

Just find a server you like and join it at the same time?

Pretty sure they want to play by themselves.

And if it's empty, you and your friends will populate it, filling the server and convincing others that its alive, resulting in it no longer being a friends-only thing.

Peer-to-peer would be nice, and to remove the aforementioned risks of IP grabbers and all that, it could be locked to friends only/invite only

Yee my friend tried to set up server since apparently the create server button just has a splash screen that says to make server on separate program or rent a server
And my friend just hated how long it took to just get it working for a small session together
As is just 2 of us

While 5k isn't great so far (especially when is not clear how there multiplayer exactly works) but least they give you peer to peer and server
