Non-story classes
What is the rationale for locking the story characters out of the badge classes? Is it just so that your generic troops will have something unique(ish) just for them, is it a balance thing, or is there some programming problem it could cause?

It is a balance / variety thing. The idea is to have incentives to use both story and generic heroes. Story heroes have unique classes while generic heroes have the various badge classes. Therefore, it is usually a good thing to use a combination of both. Just to answer, no, there is no "programming issue", and is actually relatively simple to remove restrictions on these via modding if players desire to do so.

Thanks!

Yeah, I see where it's set. I wouldn't say I "know" XML so much as I know enough to get into trouble.

I get the idea behind it, but I prefer to use characters who don't seem to sneak out for a smoke break whenever the mains are dealing with the fate of the entire world, and some of the later-joining characters don't have enough in their unique class to recommend them.

For sake of potential spoilers (since you said "later-joining characters":

Regarding Katja, her Bounty Hunter skillset is quite strong, and [Impetus] / [Know Weakness II] and [Counter: Bleed] are great to utilize. That extra speed can make for some nasty character setups, and the general flexibility of BH skillset, esp with a skill which can prevent rezzing of both monsters and humans is great.

Regarding Bzaro, if that's another character you're referring to (I'm not sure tbh). He is seriously one of the most potentially overpowered characters in the game given what kind of setups you can do with him.

If you are ever curious about modding the files, it's honestly not too difficult, and worth asking for assistance in the modding subforum (right here haha). Just a matter of changing a quick line here and there.

How common is bleed immunity? I generally discount status effects for my late game party because I've been taught that bosses have contractual immunity to most of them.

The rest of her stuff is available on generics too, hence my dismissal.

Theres also the super secret one, who is good, but not good enough to displace a badge class.

Obviously the later into the game you get the more common status immunities are, but in my experience, at least, I still get plenty of use out of the various counters which cause debuffs.

And I can understand your feelings on that--if you'd rather not, you don't have to use her. Personally even just [Impetus] in itself is so compelling to me that it's hard to pass up, but, individual playstyle is key.

I can say more or less the same thing about The Exiled, in terms of having cool passives / counter ([Pounce] you can have lots of fun with) a great skillset with lots of mobility and flexibility, etc. But, as I said above, no worries, that person is quite optional.

That last one was the hardest. I've been lusting for Pounce for quite a while, though it's very much a double edged sword. One toon with a pistol can invite enemies to my dogpile one at a time.

Quite. It's good to plan for these things, such as, some people like using dual Blood Axes since they have life steal. Pounce, hit, get life back, rinse and repeat.
