Met the conditions twice and still no Shadow variant

After equipping the ancient locket on him two battles ago I've heard my monster's hilarious deathquack twice now and there's still no Shadow in his class wheel. Does the death need to happen with certain difficulty settings? Are there certain maps it just doesn't work on? Do I need to revive him after he dies before the battle ends? Does it not work if any of the damage taken was friendly fire?

Is there at least any kind of feedback at some point during the battle or on the post-battle loot screen or something to let me know when it works? Or do I have to go all the way into Change Class and then just spin the wheel with my fingers crossed like a dumbfutz?

1. Ensure you do exactly what the requirements say

2. Ensure you have the class requirements on that monster (Scout 3, Skeletal 3)

Nothing special other than that.
