Also note that regardless of the “type” of thing you were attacked with, if they weren’t “at least two spaces away”, [Countershot] won’t trigger. If someone shoots a crossbow at only 1 space away, won’t trigger—2 spaces away? You’ll shoot back. Because of these rules, it’s technically possible to [Countershot] with a Spear at range 2, though of course, not generally recommended to have that kind of setup.
The answer as for why this ability functions differently than [Counterattack]? Game balance reasons. If ranged units with this responded to spells, then it would make handling [Countershot] units MUCH more difficult to deal with. [Counterattack] is easily circumvented by attacking at non-adjacent spots, [Countershot] is easily cicumvented by attacking from adjacent spots or slinging spells.
