Drake variants?
How do drake variants on friendly units work? Can I switch to the others, or am I stuck on one forever? I assume they don't want you using two at a time, but making you choose one forever seems restrictive.

No, not possible to change it under normal means, however, on PC, you could edit the character in your save file to have a different variant.

They're all basically the same other than a slight stat difference and what element the abilities use. I can't really think of a situation where I'd permanently want to change which variant I have for a monster.

That's a weird choice. I feel you could have done that differently, in a way that isn't so... draconian.

Maybe you could make the two elemental attacks based on which collar the monster is wearing? Non-elemental if there's no collar. Then you'd just need the one drake class.

Agree with the above, and I love the collar idea. I don't like how I have permanently have three others grayed out in my monster class wheel after I picked one. I didn't understand it the first time and thought it meant you can't have more than one drake equipped, not that you can only have one drake class ever. Bzaro gets them all!

Ummm, no? Bzaro doesn’t gain access to the Deake Variants because they are “variants”. Bzaro only gains access to the base Bulldrake class.

Bzaro gets access to a base bulldrake class that's better than any of the base bulldrake classes, because his gets the four basic elements, while actual bulldrakes are locked to one.

The skillsets are quite different. Elements aren’t everything:

To be fair the Elemental difference is very important for some monsters, Pektite for example have little use for more skills of their element but can make good use of coverage against their weakness (eg Date Pektite using Water Drake to counter Fire monsters) or to let them hunt their own element (eg Date with Fire to hunt down Earth attackers who are usually weak to Fire).

Bulldrakes have similar considerations.

Most other monsters also have 1 or 2 elements that they'd prefer to run Drake as to maximise their Elemental Resistances / counter their weakness but it's not as severe.

Yeah. Monsters with a base elemental weakness generally want the drake variant that counters it.

But for monsters that don't, or have a holy or darkness resistance, all it does is induce choice paralysis.

Exactly, sorry for the confusion. I was thinking that if Bzaro can get all four breaths -- and in one tree, no less -- then I don't see why our monsters are limited to one drake type.

I hadn't realized they got resistances. I wish that "variant body" spelled out what happens, I forget to look, and sometimes it's the best feature.
