What is this "special" necessary to become the Shadow class? What am I missing?

The "Shadow" variant for monsters says it requires "special" before unlocking. What is the special item/event needed to unlock the variant?

Thanks! I had come to the conclusion that it had to do with the ancient locket but I had no idea what that would be.

ancient locket prevents permadeath and unlocks the class

I'm about to try this on my own Zolzit. He runs amok too much as it is, it's time to put him down. Of course, then he will be come stronger than I can possibly imagine... (or something).
