Do random battles scale with party levels as in FFT? Can I grind levels via random battles to level past certain content?
I'm finding that a lot of RPGs these days forgo random battles in favor of finite battles and resources in order to keep the challenge at a controlled level. While I appreciate that, sometime I just want to dive in and grind some loot and XP, especially if I like the game's combat system.

As I'm sure many are aware, FF Tactics had a system wherein the story battles featured fixed levels for enemies, while the levels of enemies in random encounters scaled with those of the party.

Might I somehow screw up my party by grinding too much, leaning on a particular class too hard, etc.?

Just looking to find out how the system works here. Thanks!

Jamers-

To best answer your question, I recommend seeing this thread in which I described the general scaling process:

Short answer: Yes, you CAN choose to grind and "out-level" content. There are other factors to consider (as mentioned in the linked thread), but you can also change the scaling options in the Difficulty settings to find what's best for you.

So, take a look, and let me know if you have further questions.

Levels/Areas have a level range. The first area has a level 1-3 range for patrols. The first city, the one you start in has a level 4-8 range. That way you have easy levels for new fighters and harder levels for more experienced fighters.

The system is what I would call "limited scaling" for story missions - the enemies have level ranges they can be in, but will not scale to the player in an unlimited fashion.

Random* battles also have "limited scaling", but this is based on the specific random battle zone (so one zone might be limited to enemies from level 3-6, for example, while another might be limited from say 20-45). These ranges are big enough to find challenge in regardless.

In my experience, unless you just were to take a few weeks off of the story and grind, you won't be overpowered.

About the only thing I think you could do to "screw up your party" would be to not have the story characters generally the same level as the rest of your group - As you might expect, they are occasionally forced into story battles.

*They really aren't random. You trigger them whenever you want.

e;f,b.

One think I could add to the above notes is that you can change this behavior with the Difficulty Settings.
The option called "Enemies Level Scaling" lets you control if the game uses normal scaling, higher scaling or always scale, so you have some options to play with :)

Is it based on averages or something? I'm on very hard with no max scaling but I have enemies spawning in at level 5 max when that area's cap is 5 while I have half my party at level 8-10.

So either I don't understand what "no max scaling" means (there should be no limit to the scaling, right?) or something's broken.

Ah, thank you for that post. So it's an average after all, but I'm not seeing the correct math. My lowest level is 6 among my top six units. I have a 10, a 9, two 8s, two 6s, so I shouldn't be seeing enemies at level 5 if it really is an average of my six highest.

Yet, right now, all the enemies are mostly 5 with like two level 6s.

Is it average of the entire arbiter company or really just the top six? Because I do have a few level 3s and 4s, but none of them are the top six units.

Which precise encounter is it? There are a couple of encounters at the beginning of the game which have a "hard roof" on the levels even on max scaling. Also, there is a small amount of variation in the levels, if memory serves, within a + / - 10% margin.

Well, that makes perfect sense, thanks! That's probably it; I've been benching the game for a while until it neared release and just started it a few days ago, so I'm still in the early set of levels. This encounter is right when you catch up to the nobleman and invoke the arbiter's self-defense law, so I'm not far in at all. Sorry for the trouble!

Fantastic game so far, it's everything I loved about Tactics Ogre/FFT with a lot of what I hated cut out, and it really makes me even more upset we don't have ports of either series or new games of them.

That encounter is past the "hardcoded caps". But, certainly do keep an eye on your difficulty settings, the map, and the level of the enemies, and say if something still seems off later on.
