This game is no disgaea, that one is certain. The scope is much smaller as you could expect. That does not mean it is bad or anything just much smaller. The combat is similar, you can have a million characters if you want but there isn't that many systems to fiddle with for hundreds of hours. Check out the wiki to get a better overview.
The game has a lot of replayability if you're interested in trying out different characters and class combinations that you didn't the first time. Plus, there are a plethora of difficulty options that make the game play very differently. A first playthrough of the story should take roughly 35-40 hours, but there are some players who have invested 150+ hours into the game just tinkering with different builds and difficulties.
End game optional content consists mainly of a very challenging 7-level dungeon, a difficult 4-battle tournament, and the possibility of unlocking a second ending.
That is to say it has a tighter focus on being a straightforward fantasy game than the completely over the top silliness of Disgaea.
But just like all those games, you have a set protaganist, but can build up your own custom armies to fight in turn based battles. You just won't be throwing stacks of prinnies at your enemies for millions of points of damage. :D
I personally have not played Vandal Hearts, however, from what I hear from many people who played that game and talked on this forum, your estimation sounds about right-- "similar but FFT type games being more in-depth".
well one part was tough because i had 3 injured and no money. once they were no longer injured i started working the missions again. keep your people alive!
No worries WORF, the game can be a bit to get used to. If need be, never feel afraid to crank some of the settings down a little bit while you're learning, then crank it back up later ^_^
