Vandal Hearts!
Hi,

I am not sure if you remember this old ps1 title, but it was an amazing game. One of my all time favourites.

Does this game play similar to Vandal Hearts, I'm looking for something to scratch the itch.

The only thing I could recommend that would make it better would be to cram as many secret things in as you can...Unlocking secrets adds another layer of excitement for players...This game reminds me of Tactics Ogre, Vandal Hearts, and a couple of other masterpieces not just because they are the same genre, but because you have added an incredible level of detail to the classes. But I also remember how the message boards on Gamefaqs.com would light up like wildfire when someone came across a hidden special event, item, character, ect...You remiinded me of this as well when I got lucky and discovered (NOT spoiling it for any reader...Happy hunting hehe) and I remembered how the popularity would climb as more people got interested in all the buzz about something that was discovered. You have a couple of excellent secrets already. But in a game of this genre, there is no such thing as too much of a good thing :) Keep up the AMAZING work. You have definately made a fan out of me!

I personally have not played Vandal Hearts, however, from what I hear from many people who played that game and talked on this forum, your estimation sounds about right-- "similar but FFT type games being more in-depth".

You are doing a very good job convincing me to open my wallet!

And certainly feel free to check out some gameplay on youtube / twitch n whatnot, as well as the demo (download link available here in the pinned FAQ post):

Of course, feel free to let me know if you have any more specific questions.

Oh yeah i remember that game, it's quite interesting.

While it's not FFT material in quality, it's still quite good, i remember the story being good too.

Then again i had not played it for over 20 years? So i don't remember much except that one part when Ash got corrupted by his cursed sword at one point and nearly killed one of his allies, weird that i remember that specific part.

Oh yeah, deaths are quite bloody in that game if i remember right, probably the most violent deaths to exists in a tatics RPG. :steammocking:

The main difference which might matter - is when you kill someone, they do not erupt into a fountain of blood like in Vandal Hearts.

Yeah I used to love that, it was a proper gusher as well

Vandal Hearts has a sequel as well right?

Yeah, while i never played it the way the combat works seems completely unique,(you and the enemy takes turns at the same time.) but it seems extremely fustrating to play since if the enemy you planned to attack moves after the command, you just strike the air.

Just watch at 2:38 and it's a good exemple of why it can be fustrating.

I think each character/enemy only move once per round, so attacking the one that just moved will ensure that your attack land.

...then again idk since i never played it. But Props on it for trying something new.

Oh...the blood is also gone it seems, too bad.

The sequel was terrible. I could never get into it. The first just had a wonderful charm, especially with its story and characters, that you just do not get in many games these days.

Yeah the first Vandal hearts was a truly amazing game. Great story and very nice progression system which really felt rewarding when you had upgraded your characters to another tier/class.

VH2 took a lot to get used to but had a nice story with multiple endings. @AI you are right in that they only move once per turn so you had to learn how to make a move and still get a successful hit in the beginning of each turn. But it made you be on your guard throughout the battle since you never knew which enemy was gonna make a move. It was nice.

Then there was the one on PS3 - Vandal hearts: Flames of Judgement, but it was way too easy, short and the story was boring.

-But I was wondering if Fell seal is more like VH than FFT? I couldn't get into FFT since it felt like you didn't have any relation to your party members.

-Does Fell seal also have a height system in place where attackers higher up get's a bonus to their attacks?

-Can you upgrade/buy better weapons/armor? Do you find loot in battles?

1. I haven't played either, but Fell Seal has both story and "generic" characters similar to the tactics series. The generics are fully customizable in appearance and name, but don't have any dialogue.

2. Not by default, but the gunner class has a passive ability that increases damage when attacking from higher ground. Once you've unlocked it, you can put it on any class if you want.

3. You can buy and craft equipment upgrades as well as find them in chests and get some in battle rewards. You can't loot (or steal) them directly from defeated enemies, although you can loot/steal crafting components from enemies.

Hi Zefirth,

I think Fell Seal may feel closer to FFT. Fell Seal lets you recruit from a guild (player created characters), conduct patrols (optional battles) and side quests, and has a class system where a character can switch to classes they've unlocked, mixing and matching skill sets, passives, and reactions (counter abilities). Where Vandal Hearts (I can't recall VH2), you're using story characters in back-to-back battles where their participation is near mandatory, with two class branches for a character instead of say... Diego becoming a Mage or Clint becoming an Archer (at least I don't think they can if memory serves).

Fell Seal does have some height mechanics. There is a passive ability that enhances the damage based on your height advantage, which tends to favor ranged weapons since you can increase the height quite a bit. You can also knock enemies off from a high height and result in significant to fatal damage depending on the circumstances.

You can purchase or craft weapons, armor, and accessories. As you progress the story, the vendors start to carry higher tier gear and more accessories. You can find crafting components in battle and many maps have one or more lootable locations that may contain gear or components.

Thanks for you answers!

Class unlocks clings nicely in my ears but generic characters, not so much.

@TheSodaman Yup, you are right about VH1 only had two branches for every class. But I like that since then your party is always diverse and some maps will cause a serious threat to some classes. Making you really think twice before doing your moves.

If every character can be every class then it's easier to find a perfect party for every map - making the game easier.

What I'm still interested in is how you get rewarded through out the game.
- Class unlocks seems very interesting
- Vendors selling better gear as you progresses is okay but kind of expected
- Loot from chests are always nice especially if they are better than what the vendor sells
- Story progression and new maps, but that's also kind of expected

Anything else you could add to the list?

To help in your info quest, I’d recommend checking out the demo, download link available here:

https://steamcommunity.com/app/699170/discussions/0/1734336452590332614/

Other thing I’d mention is that the Story Heroes gain access to a unique class each and Generic Heroes gain access to a pool of 6 Badge Classes, which the story heroes cannot use. Therefore, there is incentive to use a combo of both.

In terms of “progression”, I’m not sure what you’re asking as that’s the standard stuff—levels, Ability Points, classes, equipment. Was there something else specifically you’re curious about? Note that more general features will be coming next year in the DLC “Missions and Monsters” (details in the news section).
