Thief 3 is dire console newbie fluff. Just get the first 2.

All 3 games made me finish them more than 5 times. I will go for another run soon, since I bought them on steam. Don't listen to Iron, you play Thief for the story and mistery, and I enjoyed 3 as much as I enjoyed 1, even more maybe. The metal age felt boring for me, since it's focused on steam world, and no magic. But yet again, I would recommend all 3, exceptional games.
Unlike other games, the main character Garrett doesn't try to be cool, he is trying to steal and stay away from action as much as possible. The story just sucks you in, and before you realise what's happening you will love this game and still play it 20 years later.

I bought the complete collection with all those, I reccomend it just for thief 2 and 3, as gold was a pain to patch (you also have to patch 2) and I eventually never figured out how exactly to fix gold.

BTW, Thief 3 is an amazing game with memorable levels, such as the infamous Cradle level, and it is full of intrigue and unexpected mythology. It is also insanely immersive, especially after disabling certain hud options with the tweaks found online

the whole lot are worth getting, Deadly shadows is the lesser of the theifs but still worth playing for its story alone, the first two are HARD but well worth playing, they make things like spintercell and other stelth games look cheap. :)

The first two games are in my all time top 10.

I am just playing through thief 3 and its not bad. NOt on the same level as first 2, but it has a lot of good content as well.

The first two if you can get past the dated graphics are great. Thief 2 is my all time favorite game, so many good times. Thief 3 was a let down to me. It didn't live up to the expectations.

I'd skip Thief 3. The first two are worth every penny. I double bought, first on GOG, then on Steam when they were released on the platform.

I found Thief 3's immersion and story superior to the first two, all 3 games are amazing. I finished 1 in every possible way. 2nd I only finished twice, didn't really catch up to me, but still good. And 3rd just brought a new world to life. I am in Thief franchise for the story and the magic world. I don't let some "consolized" features get in the way of my enjoyement. We should Bash the new Thief that's coming soon, that's an impostor.

Thief 3 feels terrible mechanically, in terms of controls, ingame physics and interaction with the geometry. Also, I haven't played Thief 1/2 proper in ages, I spend all my Thief time playing Thief 2 fan missions.

User created content for T2 is on an absolutely stellar level. Here, I'll just leave my T2 fan mission screenshot gallery here, go see for yourself:

You are in for the techinal part, I'm in for story and atmosphere. I'm not saying one way is the better.

I'd say technical is shadow resolution, shadow smoothing, usage of bump mapping that crap. This is just a simple fact, the character isn't moving in a way, you'd expect him to and that breaks the immersion.

Sure, for me it was ok.

Don't go kill me now, but I do prefer thief 3 than first 2. I just lov the non-linear gameplay. However I think that my memories about earlier games might be too insuficent to create a solid judgmentation. I just remember that they really were hard, was the difficulty the reason or were there some other elements which made the first 2 Thiefs better?

I love Thief 3. The plot and atmosphere of it is my favourite of all three, I should think, but I still adore the previous two games. The combination of all three Thief games is an amazing experience.

Don't listen to the T3 haters, all they do is give superficial excuses. Now, NuThief... that is BAD.

I got it on sale a few days ago and havent put it down. It's well worth the original price, but for $4.79? You could say, it's a steal.
