Some have said that SRPG Studio is created by the same team (ie Kaga and co ) behind this game - can that be confirmed? The dev/publishers differ between the two on Steam, but perhaps that is more to do with localization and release vs original development . Knowing if SRPG Studio was essentially developed "for" the creation of Vestaria Saga, then released as a niche gamedev toolkit on the side, could perhaps be helpful in tracking down the issue.
Given the graphical/tech level (and the fact something semi-universal like JavaScript is used for game engine scripting etc), one should think that WINE/Proton should be possible. Perhaps there is something done differently due to its original JP locale (or understanding of how the SRPG Studio engine handles things) that, once accounted for, should allow Proton to successfully play?
"Engine from the original creator of fire emblem. At it's base it is an old school fire emblem maker. The software is still being worked on and learned by English speakers." as one curator reports, for instance .
I'm not aware if there's any overlap between "SapphireSoft" and the "Vestaria" team in terms of development. Looking at the SRPG Studio info, it does seem that there are a lot of similar assets being used ; I'm not sure to the extent that Vestaria is using standard/included assets in the engine or if they're adding additional custom assets ( graphics, animations, scripts/functions/plug-ins) if at all?
In any event, the reason this matters for Linux compatibility through Proton/WINE, is to find out if the issue causing the game not to start is something inherent to SRPG Studio as an engine, or somethings specific regarding this particular games, Vestaria Saga.
Because people are idiots and none of them speak Japanese. I've been following both SPRG Studio and Vestaria since they were announced.
I could be wrong here since I never got to mess around with it (it really doesn't like non-JP locales and I couldn't get around it at the time), but I believe it uses some stock assets like tiles but things like character art and music are all custom.
You can log an issue on Proton's github tracker and maybe someone will take a look at it. https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Proton/issues
However, from my testing it has lower FPS than the windows version.
Here's a guide I made that shows the terminal command you need to install windows script host manager and a bug report for SRPG Studio.

Bumping this dead topic to let folks know this fix worked for me on Steam Deck. I downloaded Lutris Flatpak from the Discover App-> ran Lutris (if it gives you an error there will be a popup message where you have to delete the "user" part of the message that pops up and paste that into the Terminal (Konsole) for the proper Lutris install.
Next, sync Steam library in Lutris (you'll have to make your library public for the initial sync). Right Click Vestaria Saga and click "configure"->game info->change Runner to Windows)-> after changing to windows, go to game options and point to the game.exe in the steam apps folder. Open the bash terminal where you can finally type "windows wsh57" (without the quotes, hit enter and let it do its thing for a bit. Once it is done, close the window and it should work fine.
I hope that helps someone even though my instructions are probably jank.
