Underpowered at the start of game?

Just a quick one. Bought the game and played through the first section but I've hit a wall on the first boss on the ship. I know exactly how to beat it but my weapons are only doing 1 damage? Most vids I've seen show other players doing 15-20 damage per strike. Not sure if I've missed an obvious pickup somewhere? For the record I've got a knife, short sword, claymore, whip and musket.

its impossible to hit just 1 , maybe its a bug

Make sure your not wearing the Safe Ring that thing will drop your attack by 10. Trying to figure out why your damage would be that low and thats all I can come up with.

Lol well I've switched off for the night but I think that's probably it. I've got 2 rings equipped and that sounds familiar.

Only two rings you would have right now are rusted and safe so if you have two equipped this is almost definitely it.

lol, I beat that boss but equipped a safe ring in the next zone without realizing this.
Thanks so much, I was so confused why I was suddenly so weak. Thought there was a you lost all your powers type castevania story beat I must've missed or something lol.

Lesson learned, actually look at your stats. I thought that went without saying when playing an ARPG, but here we are, OP.

Yeah any equipment that reduces attack is basically useless. At no point in the game would you ever want to. You should change equipment to give you a specific resistance if you are getting beat up in a particular area. But you'll never want a lower attack for any reason.

The first two bosses are incredibly nasty, especially on the higher difficulty settings. Things get more reasonable afterwards.

if you are playing on Random you better hope for at least one really good weapon or spell somewhere on the Galleon or else you are doomed.
On normal mode you just need to grind for levels. You get OK weapons and souls on the Galleon.

why you guys are talking here in the 2019 topic lol .
the game is easy. mostly weapons have skills like down, front + attack or back, front+ attack(easier done on a controler) , you have souls or shards, its easy to become super op and just streamroller everything down .
