Secret area in the underground lab?

This video shows someone using the light beam to get up to a secret area, but they somehow jump past where they targeted and I can't duplicate it. What is happening in that video?

If it's the one where they go to the room with the cat, I'm just seeing normal behavior. You should be able to execute the 2nd part of double jump after using the beam. I used that technique to get a little more height than I would've otherwise been able to.

If you can't do the little hop and you have double jump, it's a bug.

You pretty much need to spam the jump button. I don't think it's frame-perfect but it's a very tight window to get the double jump off.

Oh, also, I wouldn't stress too much about it. You'll get Invert later, and you can craft High Jump at the alchemist.

I had this issue too. Sometimes I simply couldn't jump out of the beam. Luckily you can craft the "High Jump" shard at some point which makes reaching these places a breeze.

It should be called "Rocket Jump" though. It's that skill from Aria of Sorrow where you press ↑+LB and you propel yourself straight up, highly spammable. Super fun.

They should have put spikes on the ceiling in a lot of places, specifically to troll people spamming high jump to fly.

If it is the room with the black cat, then you can get there with just the double jump. I was able to bounce on the ceiling lamps and then drop kick diagonally onto the platform. It's tight jumping, especially to the second lamp, but possible.
