Technique input is weird
I'm trying to use techniques but so far I am having trouble to actually get them to work most of the time.
I memorized the input but it's really difficult to nail the timing for me. I also thought I was doing it wrong for a long time because I could not use them with some weapons of the same weapon type for some reason. First I actually thought my controller had issues with zones.

Do I need to flick the stick or move it slowly? How much time do I actually have to pull off techniques?
I'm basically asking for tips here.

Also, is the damage actually worth it though? I get a lot more damage out of shards apparently.

Game by default has input delay turn on, you need to turn it off but it warns you it may affect performance. I dunno why this is a thing, but I have no issue doing my techniques with it turned off.

There it no real timing required, just mash it out. It does seem that just using a sword, does not mean you can always just the same sword technique as other swords can.

Do you have enough mana? I had the same problem as you until I realized you need mana to perform the technique. "why isn't it working? I swear I did the button presses correctly.." Man did I feel dumb

I always made sure to have enough mana. But I found out that some techniques don't work with some weapons from the same type. I got a flame whip from one of the succubi and tried using techniques with it but apparently it's not compatible.
I also stumbled upon another thread saying that you need to master techniques to use them on all weapons of that category.

Wow, okay, that might actually be it. I sadly can't play right now but i'll try this option as soon as I get the chance.

Does all weapons come with an innate technique or do you think we have to master it from the more basic versions to use it with the better weapons?

I don't think all weapons of the same type can perform the same techniques. There are bookshelves that you can read that will teach you a technique and list what weapons can use it

According to the technique thread. Apparently mastering a technique allows the skill to be performed on any weapon of that type, so sword, etc. It's neat if it is true.

I find it way easier to use the d-pad to do do fighting game-style moves like these. You get much cleaner inputs than with the analog stick, worth a try if you aren't doing that already.

In my experience (though I'm playing with KB+M) you need to mash directional input BUT slightly pause before attacking. So, say, to do very common "D FD F + Attack" first you mash in directions then pause for ~100-200ms, then press attack.

A technique is doable only with a couple of specific weapons (those listed in journal notes) UNTIL you master it. Once you master it, it will work on every weapon of the class.

Damage isn't particularly important, but changes to attack zones, hitboxes, and i-frames are - e.g. basic rapier technique of "attack attack attack" creates a hefty amount of i-frames on final attack, and it also modifies your hitbox while you spam it, and you can use that fact to a pretty good extent.
Some techniques are pretty bad (e.g. that 2H swords technique that you find very early into the game), but most are useful.

Not being facetious, but are you new to the 'franchise' or something? Because the inputs are actually there as a very likely reference to the spell system in Symphony Of The Night. Like Crimson Blizzard is basically just a changed-up version of the Hellfire input in SotN.
