Game ends after Gebel?
I was at like, 40%-ish completion at the time when I ran into the Gebel fight and the game just.. ended.. after I beat him lol. Am I missing something or is that actually supposed to happen so soon? There's so much I haven't explored yet. Loving the game so far, though.

You got the "Bad" Ending. Explore the castle and fill in the map to find what you are missing.

The game does not end on a "Game Over", you have to go through the fight eventually but there are a few conditions and things you have to do which are merely hinted at. As a spoiler free hint I can just suggest to keep exploring the map and occasionally talk to the various NPCs for hints.

Similar to how you need the Aegis Armor to get all the way up without the game even telling you. You first need Zangetsus katana which you get in another part of the map. With that you have to fight Gebel again, but at some point when he gets low (do not nuke him!) you'll notice how the moon becomes all bloody, at which point you have to strike it. After that you have to do the same in an area where you were also able to see the same moon, oddly in front of the castles background which at first looks like a bug.

I figured as much. I just couldn't understand the point of the game ending there, figured I'd ask to see if I was missing something. I mean, I obviously know there's far more to do in the game, I was just surprised to walk into a room and end up fighting him, and then see the game end.. haha. It felt incredibly pointless to just abruptly end like that.
Thanks for the replies guys.

Its a callback to SOTN when you the game ends with the castle being destroyed and players were like 'wait-I never fought Dracula!'
Same thing happened when I killed Gebel. Put a big nostalgic smile on my face.

I've never really played any metroidvania games, I just picked this one up cos I thought it looked fun. If it was a reference, it went right over my head lmao

In Symphony of the Night, the game allows you to kill the "final" boss and end the game prematurely if you do not look deep enough. The game will actually ends with rolling credits and everything leading players to believe they actually finished the game when in truth they missed more than half the game.

If it isn't too big a spoiler, does Gebel scale up in difficulty as you level up? I ask because I too found him and beat him early at ~49.60% and I kinda ran through him quickly with Void Ray. Just worried I'm already too strong for him and the last fight won't be epic..

Gebel is just a stepping stone and a possible game over if not handled right. Nothing in the game scales to your level except environment hazard damage.

Warning ahead:
Final boss is still just a schmo if you are even slightly decent at the game.[/spoiler
