Check the archive instead of the techniques section to check the compatible weapons
Are you sure the move you are attempting, is allowed for your currently equipped weapon?
That's the prank. When you unlock a move, it will list it just by category. like "Shoes" or "Katanas", whatever... But it won't work JUST because it's that weapon type, whoops!
Default karate shoes have an air combo, but can't use down down attack axe kick. Knife shoes can use down down attack axe kick, but can't use the air combo, etc etc.
So countless players get pranked by this, think they are doing something wrong. Then check the archive, and the archive makes it look like it SHOULD work, when it won't. (The main menu tech list is just "Katanas bro!" broad categories. You need specific journal entries listing names of weapons for "This weapon can use X move")
This brings us to what the experience bar on special moves is for. When you max that out (by hitting things with a move), it does not power the move up as you'd expect. Rather, it unlocks it for all weapons of that type.
So if you have a weapon you know can use the move you like, spam the hell out of it with that weapon until it maxes out.
