"ZOMG THE PRICE" - Reality Check
People have no issues with the following:

Minigolf (1 hour): ~$15 average/person
Go Karts (10 min race): ~$20/person
Theme Park (1 day): ~$60/person + food/souvenirs (roughly another $100)
Dinner and Movie (2 people, ~3 hours): $100+, depending on if you're going to McDonald's or a real restaurant
CON tickets + hotel + goodies (2 days): $300+/person, depending on deals during the con

But damn, throw a♥♥♥♥♥♥fit about the following:
Video Game (20+ hours): $35 + free future DLC

The only price that is really "worth it" is an MMO subscription, and even with that you have to "repurchase" the game every expansion ($30-$60, depending on game). I'd wager dollars to cents most of the people complaining about the price pay one or had paid one at one time, so they expect potentially limitless entertainment for basically free. Alternatively, they're millennials who think they are entitled to everything for free with no regards to the costs to the developers or that they should be paid for their work to support their families past the development stage.

TL:DR - The price is fine. Grow the ♥♥♥♥ up.

A fair breakdown of prices for outdoor activities that aren't video games, but this is a common genre that we can compare other video game prices to. You're right that subscription based games are often much more expensive, but this is a single player game that doesn't require public server maintenance or any of the other costs associated with keeping online gaming consistent and free of griefing or hacking, etc.

2d platformer metroidvania's rarely clear $20, but this double that. I'm curious how that cost is justified, tbh. I've only had this game on the outskirts of my radar for awhile and was pretty surprised when I saw the pricetag today.

Pointless discussion, for some people 40 Bucks are a big investement of their money, for other it isn't.

Pointing out that it is too expensive does no real Harm to anyone and may (even if incredibly unlikely) benefit all consumers.

What exactly is the point of the debate?

I look at Hollow Knight, then back to this, I barf and keep my 40$.

Hollow knight is a a great game, but I'm also buying this. Just because two games in a genre are different prices doesn't mean they both aren't worth it. This is a title that is closer to the roots of the genre and has a more impressive team behind it.

I own hollow knight and I own this (excited to play). I am willing to pay for what I enjoy, and I have the means of doing so. Honestly I would have paid more for hollow knight than what I did.

This is like saying "skyrim regularly goes on a massive sale, this other open world RPG that isnt as impressive should do so too!" When there is no accounting for the copies sold, the investment into the title, and the company behind it.

This isn't going to be everyone's cup of tea, let alone at the price it is. However we do need to stop devaluing games, the reality is that games are cheaper than ever but cost more to make. Eventually the market will creep the prices up as the market is saturated or we'll see fewer and fewer quality games get released.

To be fair, almost any game compares unfavourably with Hollow Knight on this measure. I think Bloodstained is reasonable value compared to the others I've played, though.

OP:

You comparing different forms of entertainment that's not a fair comparison.
What you need to look at is options in the SAME entertainment form - in this case games.
And what you need to focus on is what value does this game give vs the other 2000 amazing games released in the last 30 years, and the prices of THOSE games!
i got skyrim on sale on steam for $5, AND they gave us the 'Remastered Edition' for free when that got released. I can also post you tons of other examples.
$50 CND for a game that looks like it was made in 1999 20 years ago is a ripoff!
They just trying to milk customers that they gave praise of their last game. Its a joke.

Symphony of the Night takes about ~10 hours to beat for a first time player, I think people forget that Castlevania games in general are short if you're just running through the game for the first time and not going for completionist routes and such. And guess how much those games typically launched for, it wasn't 20 bucks.

There are other games in other genres that, simply running through your first time and not counting extra content, are quite short for the price, DMC5 for example. Thinking that the price of a game should be related to the length of that game is stupid because that's subjective and different for everyone.
CrazyLamer Jun 18, 2019 @ 10:16am
Looking back on ALL castlevania games, all of them has been around this price, a fair price for what it's worth and the amount of time it gets to 100% it. Aswell as future dlc's for free which none of the older games had which btw was console EXCLUSIVE. WoW had like 8 expansions which was like $30 per expansion ? + an additional $10-$20 a month + base game another $30-$50 when it first came out.

So do the math and stop ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ about the price, this you can keep forever, wow you have to keep paying to play aswell as other mmo's.
Some lowly made indie games i can understand, but this creator is from the original Symphony of the Night.

Im not defending the price per se, but considering i bought all castlevania games retail, i atleast don't complain about this price as i can get it for PC instead of console
It's fairly pricey compared to other Metroidvania.

I can't judge how it compared, but it is more pricey to it's peers.

How instead of whining about something you can't buy because of the price you just don't purchase it? Also While hollow Knight is a great game and certainly worth buying its 2d its Alot simpler in everything when compared to this game. I loved hollow Knight I love metroid and I love Castlevania but to say this games overpriced and instead go get this game over Bloodstained when you could simply just buy and enjoy both. Is just freaking stupid. sure if you want to save money go get hollow knight great game lots to do. But just because you can't have this game which is not as simple as Hollow knight has alot more variety in terms of weapon choices and customization.. (Unlike Hollow Knight) does not mean you can ♥♥♥♥♥ and whine about the price being unfair waah Hollow knights 20$ why isn't this 20$????" simple reason this took a lot more time to make and was a lot more expensive.

I don't believe using a game from a big publisher and developer that sold millions of copies over several iterations is a fair comparison.

You pay for an experience, if the experience is fun for 10-20 hours then it's worth the 40 bucks imo. I've paid more for less fun, and I've paid less for more. I've played terraria for over a hundred hours and that was a onetime purchase near their launch when hamachi was used for it. I've also played rainbow six siege and ff14 for over 200 and paid more for them. I've also paid more for the game prey and will probably play this game more than I did that.

I paid $60.00...
