But whenever someone says something good about Invisible War, it's often treated with mockery and contempt. The peer pressure and desire to stick to the "popular" / "acceptable" opinion reminds me of the parable about the emperor's new clothes.
Both HR and IW have great and most atmospheric music <3
The HR soundtrack is great but you can't beat a jukebox playing Kidney Thieves
True
Its full of jank, I eventually decided just to buy this... I'll keep trying with deus but so far not that impressed compared to IW.
When people mention it's open-endedness and player choice, I'm pretty sure they're referring to gameplay. Cause the story is painfully linear.
Meanwhile, Alex Denton felt like a better protagonist by leaps and bounds.
While Alex does suffer from a lack of defined character, same as JC, the amount of player choice in how Alex goes through the story is staggering. And amazing voice work from Laura Bailey really helps in make the character feel more expressive and invested than JC ever was.
I think the moment that made me realize my love for IW's open-ended story was a moment in the first hub area. A main mission had me visit the local club, while I was there I got word that there were some shady dealings happening in the ViP area.
So I did a job for the club's manager, that allowed me access up there. Where I discovered a Black Market organization called the Omar, who asked me to back-stab the club owner by stealing from his basement in exchange for a discount.
So after I back-stabbed the club owner on behalf of the Omar to get a discount at their store, I then back-stabbed them by exposing their dealings to a police informant for some extra cash.
That's when I realized that you had the option to play Alex as a complete wild-card; a master of manipulation and backstabbing. And proceeded to go through the entire game as a double-triple-quadruple agent that flipped allegiances whenever it was convenient. And the voice actor always had a line to explain their reasoning.
It's a bit funny.
DE is linear in story and open-ended in gameplay
Meanwhile IW is linear in gameplay but open-ended in story
Also deus is not a perfect game even for its time. The way people praise it in its forum is amazing given that it's just system shock 1/2 with more npcs. And a fed VS fringe meh storyline. I still like it and glad I bought it.. It is great in its structure and messing around. Lot of good weapons and multi purpose gadgets. But I tend to think people just have fondness for that specific game. It's storyline is just odd and awkward and the stereotypes of the 90s glare through. It's not as intelligent as these people say it is in storyline. Maybe gameplay and inventory functions. But why is it when people are a fan of something they act like it's dethroned all games ever made? System shock 1 a 90s pixel Sim had a more awesome storyline then wherever deus 1 is going. And IW, I'll beat deus before replaying it again but from what I remember on Xbox it wasn't a perfect game but it was good enough to entertain me to the end.
People just nestle into a game then exalt it over all other games I guess. I happen to think pathologic is a better immersive Sim than deus 1 but that's just cause I like its weird story and atmosphere. But deus is a hell of a technical game but the plot and storyline is just.... Kind of dull honestly, if it wasn't for the technical game play deus would be a pretty bland game. And some of the stuff makes no sense like his bro telling him to try not to kill terrorists with instant kill crossbow darts, or how terrible pretty much every weapon but the pistol feels.
I just don't get all the minus negatives for iw cause it's a fine game.
Not that the first deus is a bad game. It's fun to play around with the inventory system, and areas do feel open ended with a lot to explore.
But damn is it janky and a lot of weapons are awful besides the pistol. The flamethrower making you crawl basically. And then crossbow dudes you gotta scope and kill cheaply cause if they even pop you once. I mean it's a fun game, but I don't see how it's any better or worse than iw and the deep red negative seems like incredible spite considering the visible upgrade works fine.
