Is this version DRM-Free?
Just needed to know as I need to be able to run this game stand alone using wine(no steam) on linux.

Yes, it is. You can launch it through the DeusEx.exe.

Also DRM sort of didn't really exist back in 2000, at least on the Unreal engine ;)

Well it's not on the steam DRM-free list and I keep hearing about the GOG version being more fully DRM-free so I though it may have been a steamworks drm thing or cloud saving feature.

Regardless I actually ain't going to be buying it now after I found out how easy it is to backup the files from my old game cd. :)

This game don't have any support from steam, by that i mean no cloud saving feature, plus about the main executable you will certainly overwrite it with the DeusExe executable which corrects a few things with the game.

Don't forget to download updated video engines' dlls if you don't want to have any problems with your GPU : http://www.cwdohnal.com/utglr/ (OGL) or http://kentie.net/article/d3d10drv/ (Dx10)

Sort of. That's what exactly I did.

- Apply the first 2 steps of following tutorial:

https://steamcommunity.com/app/6910/discussions/0/613936673444809191/

- Delete OpenGlDrv.dll file in System folder and extract OpenGLDrv.dll from dxglr21.zip to System folder.

http://www.cwdohnal.com/utglr/

- Apply the lastest retail patch of the game. If that does not work, simply extract DeusEx.exe from DeusExMPPatch1112fm.exe to System folder.

http://www.fileplanet.com/59470/50000/fileinfo/Deus-Ex-Patch-v1112fm

- Change the renderer of the game into OpenGL.

- If the game is too fast or too slow, you may need to set your CPU into "performance" mode before starting the game. Depending your distro, you may add an applet called cpufreq-applet in your taskbar.

You are ready to go. Just run DeusEx.exe via WINE. Actually you do not even need Steam via Wine to download game files. SteamCMD works fine to download game files.

Besides, Steam's DRM is barely noticable. It doesn't interfere with your gameplay, it's unlike EA.

The only thing Steam changed is the .exe, replacing it with DeusExe or hanfling's launcher sorts the "issue". The only thing I've noticed with the Steam exe is that you can only launch it from within steam, you can't launch it from a regular shortcut or by opening the .exe directly.

Thats pretty much all I needed to know as it's a issue emulating wine AND steam just to play deus ex.

As I pointed out before, you can replace the Steam's exe of the game with retail exe of the game which let's you play without launching Steam.
