PC vs PS2
Im probably gonna tick some people off so sorry in advance but keep in mind that this is just my personal opinion......I first played this game when it was released for the PS2 & absolutely loved it....tight controls, no bugs & the opening movie & music were MUCH better. As for the PC version the movie is shorter, the music is annoying (in the opening movie) my weapons get stuck & I need to delete an .ini file, can't tell if quicksave works and as far as I can see I can't toggle the laser sight to my weapon on. On the PS2 your controller handled everything with just pressing a few buttons while on the pc you pretty much have to memorize every keyboard stroke to it's command. Some of them make no sense (x for crouch, semicolon to reload????) & the mapping system pretty much sucks; 1 example is when I try to remap "R" for reload & the game gives me that plus another key that was already in use. I just wanted the dam "R" key! Don't get me wrong, it's still a good game but the PS2 version was MUCH better simply because it lacked the buggy issues the pc version has.

There's actually unoffical patches for the game made by the community. The keymapping is a bit weird, but it's an old game. Haven't tried the PS2 version so wouldn't know.

Thanks, I've seen the patches but the game runs & plays fine so I'll avoid them for now. Alot of the issue for me is convenience. Seems like gamesystems have pc's beat as far as "ready to go out of the box" while pc versions usually take extra time & effort just to run them properly. If you look at my steam library the only game that ran fine right from the start was Dishonered & funnily enough I bought that game at Walmart!!!! It's how I got onto steam. On the flipside tho pc games usually offer better mods which I like alot without any monthly fee. Plus overall pc is way less expensive if you are patient & look for good deals. Pros & cons for either road gamers take.....

Yup, a quick overhaul of the keybindings to use a more modern format is needed. I should get someone to do that and then post it online. :)

Now, THAT would be awesome!

I think if you'd played PC version BEFORE PS2, you would have another opinion.
As for key bindind, i don't get the problem. I've rebinded everything in my tase without any problems.

Maybe Vora but at that time I was into the PS2 simply because I could pop in a disc & play without having to mess around trying to get a game to work (Vampire the Masquerade, Daggerfall, Deus Ex just to name a few). I traded the PC version at the time for the PS2 one because it would crash every hour or so & that was with a good system. As for binding, for some reason when I rebind the command to the key I want the game still keeps the default & just adds the new key. An example is when I tried to change reload to the r key. It was accepted but also still kept the semicolon key listed for the same function. All that aside the game runs fine & is still fun to play so it's all good.

Played DXHR. Then DX, mapped my keybindings exactly as in DXHR. No problems.
If the game shows its own key plus yours, just delete it first, but even with own key/your key it'll play your key.

Or if someone that has rebinded their keys to a "modern" format would care to upload and link their User.ini, it could be hosted online so others quickly could download those settings.

No, the keybinds for the PC were objectively awful, as was typical for games around that time. The thinking was: you have a keyboard, so map every conceivable control to it. Handheld controllers have forced developers to focus on tight, intuitive controls, and games are better for it now.

A mod to fix the controls and make them more modern would be great, but it would definitely need to be a mod. There's lots of controls that should be merged together or removed completely.

What? No. God no. DX has just about flawless controls; I've got everything I need bound around wsad. Reaching up to the function keys to activate augs is plenty user friendly.

Sure, for you but there are a bunch of improvements that could be made for me. Besides, the beauty of a mod is if you didn't want to change anything then you simply ignore the mod & don't install it;-) For me personally, I would change a lot of bindings to match Vampire the Masquerade as I've logged a ton of hours on it & it's almost second nature for me. Problem is that trying to change the buttons in DX isn't feasable simply because it seems that the original default button remains & all you can do is add a new one. That's the flaw Id like to see changed.

I've only played the PS2 version as well, it included updated graphics and music, I debate getting the pc version but I decided the PS2 experience was good enough.

Can anyone tell me if the PS2 classic version downloadable on the PSstore has improved framerate and such? I really like the PS2 version but the framerate and the loading times kinda bothers me.

Intro Movie was shorter on the PC?! No, that's definitely wrong. While the music may be a little odd for some gamers, the opening intro for the PC version of DX: GOTY was definitely longer than the PS2 one. The conversation between Walton Simons and Bob Page was much longer than the PS2 version. I have seen both versions and compared them before.

As for the controls, it actually isn't difficult to get used to them. I did. As for the bugs, yes, I'll admit that it took me a while to get it working smoothly on Windows 8. But, once you're done dealing with the bugs, it's worth it. The PC of Deus Ex has larger maps, shorter loading times and a more useful interface. Those things that the PS2 couldn't handle.

However, I understand you're used to PS2 version, so I'll give in to that. Your choice is your choice. But, there's a reason why the PC version of Deus Ex is still considered by many the greatest game of all time.
