3D sound needs specialized hardward if I remember correctly, could be that.

Might be a good idea of checking your hard drive as well as hard drive issues can result in all sorts of weirdness. I'd recommend SpinRite but it's a bit pricy, try going with a simple chkdsk /R and then later a sfc /scannow.
