Deus Ex: Game of the Year Edition

Deus Ex: Game of the Year Edition

Should I play Dues Ex: GOTY or Deus Ex: Revision?
I've never played any Deus Ex, but always wanted to. Just acquired it on sale, and wanted to know if I should go straight for the mod or stick to the original.
I don't mind old/dated graphics, ui, etc. (still play DOS games from time to time), but am not a stickler and am happy with updated versions that don't cut/diminish the core game (e.g. Baldur's Gate Enhanced).

Thank you

Play the GOTYE. Revision just clutters up the maps and makes the game far less enjoyable.

I think it's really fun just not as a first play through.

Revision is quite demanding, reduces visibility to a degree that infringes on the original gameplay, and causes beginner enemies to randomly one-shot you in combat even on Normal difficulty. If you can live without the spiffy graphics, I'd say try the original while they iron out the kinks. There are two graphics mods you can use for a more moderate update too.

It is extremely competent out of the box, so only experts would notice whatever tiny fixes and tweaks Revison applies besides graphics.

Revision's level design and layouts are fantastic, but what I can't forgive is how they completely ruin the AI. It makes stealth an absolute chore and they seem to spot you from just about any distance if they face you. While that is realistic, Deus Ex doesn't have the mechanics inplace to support that.

I have to start over completely after dumping around 10 hours in out of frustration. :(

Revision is something you´d want for a second playthrough maybe, but even then you´d be better off using GMDX instead.

This so much. Deus Ex GOTY vanilla then with GMDX for your second playthrough.
What the other two people said. I wouldn't recommend Revision for a first time playthrough anyway since it basically takes some huge artistic liberties with the levels and this won't be to everyone's liking. Besides New Vision+HDTP(the Deus Ex Total Graphic Overhaul if you want both) makes the game look good enough to me.

Do play GMDX once you're done with a vanilla playthrough though.

At minimum you should get kenties launcher and either the direct3d10 or enhanced opengl renderer for deus ex... This will maximise compatibility , allow you to run in your wide-screen resolution and help the game to run with the modern graphics cards of today.

I opted for GOTY + HDTP + New Vision with dx10, works like a charm.
Revision is a gameplay changer, dont mess with such mods until you play through vanilla.

Would you recommend GMDX for a first playthough? They say it doesn't change the essence at all

I'd still recommend the setup i mentioned but thats up to you if you mind playing a heavily tweaked game. Story is still the same so its a matter of you wanting to experience the original dx or more refined albeit fan made dx

Well, The first thing I noticed is that you can mantle over obstacles... In the training mission you have to put a box next to a bigger box so as to jump over it; but mantling over it defeats the purpose of piling smaller boxes next to bigger ones so as to overcome obstacles.
Now, this is just an instance of gameplay changes... but there may be more.

Yup, in my opinion? Play the statue part in my setup and then again in GMDX. You'll know which one your prefer :P
