Can somebody explain the lore of Deus Ex to me?
I really enjoy playing the deus ex franchise, I started off playing Human Revolution but I didn't quite understood the story and didn't knew what was going on and haven't finished the game either. Then I bought the original Deus Ex game to hope I would understand the lore better but it didn't work either and yet again i really had no idea what was going on. Most of the time i would understand every lore in a game and mostly they are games with a complicated and big lore, I and I am talking about games like: The Witcher, Or Metal Gear Solid Especially, But this time I really don't understand it, So can anyone explain the basic lore to me? So I know what is going on, And please don't give too many spoilers away I don't wan't it to be ruined.

Sincerely,
-Ruben Newell

Alright, alright, I'll tell you the lore of Deus Ex. There are old men running the world.
There are factions that want to rebel, and/or drop out. Mostly druggies. Of course there is the military conspiricy, and the political conspiracy, and all manner of side quests and puzzles to figure out. It is internationaal in scope, france, USA, Orient, et al. I regret that I did not get to finish this back in the day, but my ISP is very IFFY, and undependable. Got booted from On-line.

NOT old men....Secret societies and Military Industrial Comples are competing for control at various levels. Each would have different result if ANY ONE of them gained total control.. This game is a futuristic, Sci-Fi game ofpossible outcomes, depending on what decisions you make at various key places in game. One contrib is the Illuminati, an ancient group of powerful, rich, families that have for centuries managed to remain elusive and influence governments around the world. FACT. They, like the Mafia, promote rumors of their NON existance, in order to remain annon...

The private sector, and military working to develop control thru technology for personal gain and riches...and religions that exploit human frailties and ignorance to gain power and influence, and of course, MONEY. Send your donations now for a blessing, etc..

And the Hero must make decisions that will support or deny one or more groups some advantage. Then there is the matter of the Greys. Aliens. Ref crashed space ship and Hanger 18, CIA, etc....

Hold off on Human Rev, as it is WAY harder than this original, Then look at Invisable WAr...Then go back to HR if you like. Each game has similar themes, but all encompass the themes of control by government or someone, or thing.

Good hunting for that...

In Deus Ex, it essentially boils down to the conflict between the Illuminati and MJ-12. When I first played it back in 2001, I didn't have the benefit of hindsight. I learned the "lore" by carefully playing through the game: interacting with as many NPCs as possible, exploring rooms, and reading the emails and books present in the game. Take you time, and the lore will present itself.

Just play the damn game!

in human revolution, you play the first perfectly augmented person. you uncover a conspiracy involving the illuminati to link the minds of everyone on the planet into a hivemind. in the conspiract (1st game), you play as JC, the twin, and upgraded version of the nanomachine augmented guy Paul. you continue the conspiracy decades after HR, and... F*** this, i'm too high.

SAVANT sums it up nicely. IF you want some indepth understanding to the speculatives put forth in the game. Invisable WAr carries this to further conclustion, based on the original game. It makes certain assuptions, but that should be clear as the game progresses. As a sociologist, I can see the probabal scenarios in each of the three endings, but remember that these are predicated on the believefs and/or understandings of the writers, et al. having played the games through several times, to see what each ending is like, it seems palusable, based on the assuptions of the writers. there is a some satifaction in getting through the games and being a hero, or similar, and defeating or al least thwarting the schemes of the Military Industrial Complex that has been running the USA and World Geo-politics for decades. ALL this orchestrated behind the scenes by players such as the Alluminati, and munitions MFG, that prosper when there is conflict and such in the world. It is all corrupt and for the profit of the few at the top of the food chain. PRAY for our world. It is the only ting we can do for sure. HUMAN Revolution is a far-out Sci-Fi fantacy, that has little reality in its concept. I can not get past the first few minutes, as it triggers PTSD and angst. Perhaps, that could be attributed to 60 years obsrvation of the Human Condition, and the current state of affairs in the world at large. THINK about it. ISIS is just a glimpse into the INHUMANITY of man. It is NOT a religious organization, but an attempt by its' leadership to gain wealth and power and get the IGNORANT followers to help it, albeit unwittingly, to gain more wealth and power and of course more sexual experiences.

How is it possible to not understand the plot?? wtf.
Perhaps the best way to explain the "lore" is to understand the source material that went into this game. Most of the plot elements were cribbed from conspiracy theory literature that had become very widespread throughout the 1990s. Remember, this was the era of The X Files, Independence Day, and many laughably silly conspiracy theories involving aliens and much more.

In the 1990s, there were a variety of anti-government incidents involving paramilitary extremists, like the OK City bomber, Ruby Ridge, the Unabomber, David Koresh, etc. The NSF as an idea is a mixture of extremist groups and individuals, both real and imagined.

It's fascinating to me that the game took as inspiration several of the more exotic and goofy conspiracy elements, such as black helicopters, cloned alien life forms at Area 51, a widespread virus (analog to HIV) being a government-created plague, fluorination of water being used to control populations, and even transgenic mutants released into sewers of big cities. And of course, a massive name-drop of the long-running conspiratorial groups like the Illuminati, Majestic 12, the Freemasons, the Knights Templar, and the Trilateral Commission.

I don't really think most of those conspiracy theories are so exotic and silly compared to just about any of the ones we have nowadays. :p
Besides the basic premise, the idea of government controlled by corporations or shadow governments is much more in vogue now than in 1999.

Lore was Data's evil older brother, he was a right mischief merchant based on the mythological Loki. He doesn't appear in Deus Ex.

You could also read the Deus Ex bible to learn more about the setting Deus Ex takes place in.

Type "Deus Ex Bible" on google and click the first link.

Watch the TV news casts. Read all the articles and "ebooks" in the game and pay attention to what you are doing in the quests and most of all get to the ending and you will have good knowledge of what is going on...... or will you? That is the essence of the first Deus-Ex. People have shunned DE The Fall but that also has a side story or parallel story also to tie into the series with DE Mankind Divided. Personally, I like story but don't need much to enjoy sci-fi games like Deus Ex. I like being thrown into futuristic worlds.
