A huge part of Deus Ex's design revolves around CHOICE and CONSEQUENCE. The story is shot through with the themes, but it's also there in gameplay. You can't carry every item, you can't install every augment, you can't max every skill, you can't buy out every shop, and there are no do-overs. You don't even get an unarmed attack, healing, or energy recovery. You must choose how to use your resources without knowing what the future will hold.

I'll give you an example. There's one point where there are two paths available. One has a laser tripwire that activates turrets to shoot you. The other has superheated steam venting into it. You can run through either and take the damage, you can expend lockpicks or multitools to deactivate one or the other, you could EMP or explode the turrets. Which resource do you expend to get past that? And there's an NPC that warns you about the obstacle ahead of time, if you took the time to gather clues.

You don't see many games that reward decision making skills the way DX does.

If you use Shifter mod you can store things in JC's office. Otherwise, you can only keep items in reused maps - this part is tricky and I've forgotten quite a bit

IIRC correctly certain locations in NYC that routes back to old side maps even as NYC's map is different as the story progresses
