If it's your first time, just play vanilla

yeah, it's just too dark, do either of these mods change the storyline?

GMDX doesn't change the storyline, just adds some new mostly subtle features. You can look up all the changes it makes. It's more like an enhanced version of the og experience.

Seconded. First time play vanilla.

Any reasons to why?

I once read this somewhere (probably in r/deusex) "first time play vanilla so on your 2nd run when you GDMX you'll appreciate it more"

It's true that you'll appreciate GMDX more if you play the unmodded version first, but you don't have to. GMDX will give you the full Deus Ex experience but in enhanced form.

It's not "enhanced", GMDX is a gameplay mod and it changes a lot. There were a couple of instances where they were frustrating enough I wished I was playing vanilla.

All you need is Kentie's launcher and an updated renderer, this should solve the issue

GMDX improves the game in many places. And in many other places it makes it frustrating. The improvements are the extra interface options such as mantling and the stacking of items, and the extra routes it has added to many of the levels. The frustrations are with the reduction of resources that you can find, and the removal of pretty much all fun ways in which you can make a level easier on you (such as making it impossible to turn robots against their masters, the removal of many ways to take out enemies from a distance with a sniper rifle, and the removal of the possibility to knock out the strongest enemies). One main goal of GMDX was to make the game more challenging, but more challenging does not necessarily mean more entertaining. In general, I like the game without GMDX more, but I deplore the fact that the interface enhancements of GMDX are not in the original game.

GMDX makes some maps bigger and weird to explore, but it is generally FUN

not just revision level of fun where you have more map to explore
they made gameplay more doom, but didn't took away difficulty of it
means you can dishonored in GMDX
