Need Help Fixing In Game Audio and Music Poppng/Crackling for Deus Ex GOTY on Steam
Been super excited to finally play OG Deus Ex GOTY on Steam but have run into an extremely frustrating issue with the audio.

Basically after starting the game all audio is exhibiting a persistent popping and cracking which sounds similar to when an audio interface's buffer size is too small. These glitchy audio artifacts are present on all in game audio and music, however when I play the source .umx game audio files in VLC from Steam's library the issue is not present, all music plays back as it should.

Has anyone else here encountered this issue?

Also tried the renderers available but no luck there either which is what prompted me to seek help directly on here.

I like the sound of that full separate audio renderer you mentioned, something tells me it's an issue with game engine's playback of the audio files as VLC can play the source audio without issue.
Appreciate the lead on that one will try and track it down. Hopefully I can get this fixed because being a first time player I don't want to start with the Revision mod unless I have to, want to experience something closer to vanilla. Thanks again
Found it, it's called OpenAL. Fourth forum post down.

Installation is as follows:
1). Extract the contents of the .7z file to your Deus Ex>System folder
2). Next open up your DeusEx.ini (easily accesible via a button on the lower right hand corner of Kentie's launcher)
3). Under [Engine.Engine] (already right near the top of the ini file) change "AudioDevice=Galaxy.GalaxyAudioSubsystem" to "AudioDevice=ALAudio.ALAudioSubsystem"
4). In the file "inichanges.txt" that comes inside of the .7z, copy all of that and paste it either above or below "[Galaxy.GalaxyAudioSubsystem]" in the DeusEx.ini file (be sure to make sure it replicates the format of the other entries, with at least one space/line break above and below the beginning and end of it)

And then you're done!

Also as a side note: while GMDX is nice, if you want vanilla (or something close to it with only Visual Enhancements) GMDX is far from it, and provides a significant shift to the experience that alters it far beyond what could be considered vanilla, or at least the base game experience.

Grab Kentie's launcher and change the audio latency. You can try 40, 60, 80, or 100 (it's different for each person, so there's no definitive answer)

If that still doesn't work, try either the Direct3D 10 renderer or Enhanced OpenGL (D3D10 can be grabbed from the same website as kentie's launcher. It messes with the lighting, but that can easily be switched back to classic)

Finally, if all else fails, there's actually a full on separate audio renderer that you can use, but I can never remember the name of it off the top of my head, so i'll have to do some digging and find it again.

Absolute legend, yep that fixed it completely, now I have perfect crackle free audio! Wasted days trying to figure this out and you were right it was the audio engine itself. Regarding GMDX not being vanilla, I'm open to some lease of life improvements and other little tweaks but the Revision mod seemed like too much of a departure. Will roll with GMDX for now and see how it goes. So stoked to finally play this legendary game appreciate help fixing this!

Gotcha, just wanted to make sure since it seems to get blindly (and aggressively) recommended new players as the "definitive" Deus Ex experience by a select few. Glad I could help though! Hope you enjoy the game!

Thank you so much! I just installed Deus Ex under Winlator 9.0 on my cellphone. It's an absolute blast to have this game in my pocket - works great with stable 60 fps on Snap 8 gen 3. But this cracking audio was driving me crazy! I lost like half day trying to fix it, but most ppl suggest changing latency in ini file or other not useful crap. This thread saved a day. Now everything works like a charm.
if you guys still need any help, give a deep look in my guide that i make recently 2025
