The EA Version runs fine, the demo not at all.
Just buy the the EA and refund it if you are not satisfied.
I never regretted buying it, had enough fun with the game already.
I can confirm what fendrin said. The demo wouldn't start at all while the actual game runs perfectly fine. Game was on my WL for ages anyway so I just bought it :)
Linux/Mac support is something they are considering but only for after the full release.
Though Linux isn't officially supported we will do our best to look into issues. There is a Foundation thread on protonDB here: https://www.protondb.com/app/690830
One of the Foundation Discord community did have some luck getting Demo running. Perhaps this might also work for you on the 1.9.7.9 version.
Note I cannot vouch for this or any third party software so please use due diligence and research.
"For anyone wanting to play the demo on Linux, you'll need to use protontricks to install the MFC140 dll. You can find youtube videos going through the exact same process but for another game."

I cannot vouch for this nor for any third party software so please do the research needed. MFC140 dll is part of the Windows redistributables so should be available directly on the Microsoft website.
But I can only place one building.
After that selecting a new one transforms the mouse pointer into the silhouette of the building in question but only for a split of a second.
So it seems the placement is cancelled automatically right after the selection.
I can solve this problem by save and loading, for each building to place.
i tried 4 or 5 different proton versions, it's always the same: i press play, the play button turns into the stop button, after 5 seconds it turns back to the play button. that's it. any ideas?
