Charcoal Hut needs to use regular Wood resource
Please make the Charcoal Hut use the existing wood resource, as all the other Wood dependant production sites. It doesn't make sense for this single building to behave differently.
  • There is already Job that focuses on chopping trees
  • It artificially restricts where you can place a Charcoal Hut, since it needs trees
  • With a Lumber Camp nearby, the Woodcutting Area has to be expanded for both to find enough trees
  • If you want Lumber Camps to focus on a specific area, you can't. Because the Charcoal Hut workers now also need to walk there, effectively disrupting the whole Charcoal dependant supply chain
  • It wastes time, even if placed directly next to trees, resulting in low charcoal production

I just started my second (post release) game and after unlocking the Charcoal Hut, instead of playing, I am writing this post...

There's also a thread in "General Discussion" that I'd like to link here:

+1 This would make sense, it took me a while to realise that the Charcoal hut workers were actually cutting down their own trees rather than using the ones in storage.
This always threw me for a loop when I started playing, but I think having them be independent is actually more useful. Being independent means that I can then spread them out and not have to factor it in to my wood/planks pipeline. Historically this wasn't always a combined job, that is chopping wood for lumber and chopper wood for charcoal were typically done separately, since cutting wood for building purposes was harvested much differently whereas charcoal could basically use any chunks of wood.

The Problem is, that they inevitably influence the wood pipeline since they are competing for the same trees. The same trees that are limited by how many territories you can afford, by where the boars spawn, by where you want to develop your village and other industries.
Them cutting their own wood forces players to place them somewhere far away from the lumber camps and pray the Charcoal Burners or Woodcutters never run out of trees on their respective zones.
If the Charcoal Burners do run out of trees in their zone, suddenly they are walking across the map just to cut a tree, and your charcoal production basically stops.

And even if tree availability does not cause any problems, to avoid bottlenecks you still want to have all charcoal dependant production sites at least semi-close to the charcoal huts (or the warehouse where the charcoal arrives, which can't be too far away from them either).
Now the placement of a whole industry is affected by Charcoal Huts being picky with how they want their trees cut.
Because just as you say, they could basically use any chunks of wood, but the game doesn't allow that.

There should be an option you can tick in the building wether they can use Wood from Storage.
You should be able to tick on/off two options;
Cut trees down
Use Wood from Storage.
Ticking both off is basically putting the building on pause, but this way you can choose for both ways.

Yeah, making it optional sounds like an acceptable solution.
Here to offer my two cents once more, that Charcoal Burners really hate the massive stockpile of wood I put them right beside :\

Why not allow them to do both, whatever is closer so to speak? There are many more friendly ways to approach this issue! Since I am re-playing on mod launch day, perhaps a modder will fix this irksome issue. If I find one, I will come and post it here :)
