The best practice to keep hunting and boars from leaving is to keep a big (at least 10-20 boar icons) virgin forest at the outskirts of your village
What I eventually figured out, is that the boars can respawn far away and do so in a somewhat randomized ‘scattered’ pattern. Once a boar respawns in a neighboring tile that you don’t own, he will never come back because hunters won’t cross the border. This created a situation where I bought a brand-new tile that had nothing but forest and boars and even without building a single thing in that entire tile, the boars slowly disappeared as they eventually respawn in a neighboring tile, making themselves unreachable.
Since all generated forests span multiple tiles, the only way I see out of this is to purchase multiple tiles and cut off the forest to surround the boars before building the hunters and butchers. But I think this will only work if the boars don’t jump to a different forest on respawn. I haven’t had enough time to test if boars can jump across grass to respawn in a neighboring forest, but hopefully not.
Sorry for the confusion. I think the easiest answer is to implement baking or cheese making, which can thrive in a single tile. Hunting might be available early, but the roaming makes it more complicated to implement sustainably.
There are LOADS of boars in the forest areas in the neighbouring territory, but it's clear that there is a distinct cutoff of boars right at the border between my territory and the neighbour. Half of the forest is in my territory, and half is in the neighbouring one... yet my territory's section is completely void of boars, whereas the neighbouring one is filled, going right up to the border, where it gets sharply erased of boars.
Tried reloading the save, waiting to see if something spawned in over time, and whatever else I could think of, but it seems almost like a 'Forbidden' area was painted in my territory, right up to the border (...but for boars).
Not sure what to do. Everything else seems to be functioning fine.
If I figure anything out, I'll post here so you can give it a try...
