Commoner Housing Issue
Hey all,

I've recently started a new game, and when I upgrade serfs to commoners, they suddenly become unhappy with their housing, complaining that they can't find a home close enough to their workplace. This is an issue even for commoners who live right next (15m) to their workplace. I see them enter their homes, and their home satisfaction bar never fills up. I even tried making them unemployed just to see if it would change. Nada.

Anyone else have this issue? I had it happen on an earlier game, too, and restarted thinking I had simply ruined my layout and didn't have housing close to workplaces, but it only happened once I upgraded to commoner.

You need to increase the desirability around their houses to High or Very High so that they upgrade them. Commoners need a level 2 house.

With the exception of one, all the houses are high or very high. I'm wondering if it's a population issue, or maybe everyone who lives in the house has to be a commoner. I'm going to experiment a bit and see. The game has been crashing almost daily and asking me to send a report, so I'm worried I might just be bugged.

Looks like I might have a bugged game. I specifically upgraded 2 villagers living in the same very high house to commoner. One of them moved out. When I made housing areas, she built a commoner house, rather than upgrading the one she was in before. The other guy stayed in the original house and would just move back in whenever I kicked him out.

There is currently no known such issue, do you use any mods? If not could you share the save file for us to take a look?

I don't run any mods, no. I just deleted everything and reinstalled the game and ran into the same issue on this playthrough too. I intentionally upgraded all the serfs living in the same house to commoner. A couple moved out and built a new house, but the others didn't. So I demolished the house to see if they would rebuild but they didn't.

How do I share the save file?

Thank you for your help.

Whoops, sorry about that. Should be good now.

Ok so in the save file I can see you have 8 serfs living in Average desirability lvl 1 houses.

At the end of the month I promoted all 8 of them to commoners and as expected the lvl 1 houses do not fill their housing need and they take a negative happiness modifier.

Then I added a few decorative trees around the 4 houses to increase their desirability to High or Very High and turned housing upgrades on from the village panel (opens from the button with the villager count on the top left) where you probably accidentally had turned them off.

Finally two of the houses upgraded to lvl 2 while 1 of them also upgraded to density 2 to house your villagers, so 6 commoners moved in one and the other 2 remained in the other leaving the 2 lvl 1 houses empty for new serfs to move in when you upgrade your remaining newcomers.

PS: you have painted red zone in front of one of your bridges and thus blocked the trader from visiting your village, you should remove that red zone ;)
