1.9.4 Commoners
What am I overlooking here?? I tried to promote my first commoner but it tells me no one has reached their entertainment need, so I built a tavern and a berry brewery. I can't get my berry brewery going because it requires commoners, thanks.

I guess you don't have enough commoners for the tavern and brewery to start working - one is not enough. You should promote more serfs.

You missed the point... To get serfs eligible to become commoners, you need stuff that requires commoners... So how do we get our first commoners ?

It's how I understand the question because I fall into that loop on trying the new update.

No, you don't need clothing or entertainment to promote to commoner. All you need to make sure at least one serf has all of his/her needs met. If they are met, that person will be eligible for upgrade to Commoner.

Are you using mods or anything? Can't think why the game would insist that you fulfill a serf's entertainment need when they don't need any entertainment.

I totally missed the two food requirement. I got berries and fish going, built a church, and then my guys were eligible to be promoted to commoners. Thanks for the help.

I found that once everyone had housing and I had completed two foods and the basic church, all the serfs became eligible. Not sure why it says entertainment. What it really means is "service" needs.

"Entertainment" is the old drink requirement for citizens/soldiers. Commoners have been added to it to increase the usefulness of the Tavern monument. It's met using beer, wine, or berry brew. Service is still service (church) needs.

guys, I know I'm late, but how can I promote a commoner to citizen without a tavern, because it's required a citizen to run a tavern but I have none

You sure about that? Pretty sure you only need commoners to run the service counters and serve as Taverners. Got a screenshot of your tavern showing the job that requires a citizen?
