Why do villagers keep leaving?

I'm not sure if this is a bug or a game mechanic I don't understand. I have 75% happiness, and all of the housing requirements for my housing is stable, but I keep getting work places that are mysteriously empty. It seems like villagers are leaving the village without me noticing, and I can't figure out why.

That is a very deceptive metric, because while some villagers may be at 105%, others can be at -10% quitting life. Click on the 'smiley face' icon to open your Villagers (F5) list and then sort by (un)happiness. Look at your most unhappy Serfs and then solve for whatever their problem is. Then repeat that for Commoners and then Citizens.

If your issue is Serfs with "Housing Insufficient", you need to either upgrade Density or zone some more residential areas. For Commoners & Citizens with that issue, you most likely need to upgrade the Housing Quality -- and plausibly also the Density.

Ok it seems like it's definitely this. Individual villagers are very unhappy and are probably leaving. I think it is mostly the ones I have upgraded to Commoner, because my refined food sometimes runs out.

Great to know this isn't a bug, I actually really like this mechanic. Thanks for the help.
