Just go broke and quit? Is that the game?
No income modes are working, tax office brings in zero even after raising it and making everyone unhappy. I tell the storage to sell planks, and nothing happens. This is more frustrating than fun! I played 4 years ago last, and it was more enjoyable than this. WTF?!?!

I was having issues with this, what i need to fix was selling a variety of produts and got a huge income
Gotta employ a tax collector, but they suck in the beginning with their low efficiency.
Also have to put up a trade-route. Only then will trade begin.
no offense guys but I've been playing this game for years, both early versions and now the new stuff, and the economy works just fine, you just have to try and master the game a littel bit

At first I didn’t know diddly-squat about sustaining a proper income and used the levy mandate a lot. Waited until the happiness malus wore off and activated it again. Worked well until taxes and trade finally kept me afloat.

The game holds your hand and guides you through every little step at the beginning; there is nothing more it could do, and yet that does not seem to be enough.

First off, make sure your tax office is considered fortified. This can be done by having a tower on your manor. If its not fortified, your tax people will not work.

Secondly, open your book and make sure you have a tax rate set.

Trading depends on your stockpiles. Traders will not buy goods from your production buildings. If the planks are not in your stockpile they can not be sold. The same works for buying, you need to set up your stockpiles to accept the new goods or they will not be sold to you.

Limit what you buy, your first trade partner, at the first rank, will only buy up to 25 of each type of goods form you. A plank only sell for a gold each. So at best, even if you have hundreds of spare planks, you can only earn 25 gold a week from planks. However tools sell for 3 or 4 gold each. So it only takes buying a few tools to complete negate any profit you would get from trading planks.

Start producing polished stone and trading it, then move on to doing the same with meat. Avoid bread, its a bit of a trap.

Dont overlook the ability to levy taxes. Its a fairly minor happiness hit that you can do pretty much every other week without harm, as long as your serfs have access to rustic food and services.

The levy is the only thing stopping total bankruptcy. I cannot afford to actually do anything but wait until each levy?

I have a tower, and tax rate set to 15%, but it still just loses $. I use the levy constantly, which is very unsatisfying. I built the polisher but it adds more upkeep.

What is losing money? The village? Open up your Budget (F7) and figure out how to balance the books.

For the most part, everything you do in the early game should be geared towards establishing a strong, self-sustaining economy -- primarily through trading.

The best (?) way to make money in the early game is to buy Boar from Trotbury and then turn around and sell Meat to Northbury.

Cannot afford to expand anywhere, cannot afford to buy the research things available.
Broken taxation which is set to 15% and has a tower next to it, yet brings in zero $. Only by using levy constantly can I scrape by.

Is this the normal experience? The tiny 2 plots unlocked have almost no space left either.

I mean, sort of, yeah. There's always a learning process. You may still be in it. I restarted three times before I finally felt like I had a grasp on the early game. Then another 8 to get a feel for expansion and how I wanted to go about it. I bet I spent 20 hours just putzing around figuring out all the mechanics.

Rome wasn't built in a day.
Ok the game is just a very very slow burn. Making +2 gold from taxation now. Even on 3x speed it seems slow.

I appreciate everyones help, thanks.

It's not so simple as "learning the mechanics" in the new version like some people are saying. In the latest patch, my tax collectors aren't collecting... my builders are grabbing materials, standing there, then dropping them back off (never building) and my economy for some reason is tanking (it seems like nothing is being collected so my trade just completely died since the last patch)... my monks and nuns no longer work and instead just say they are "working" while stuck in their quarters so they never collect herbs anymore... It's a mess

This says it all =)
try levying money frequently in the early game, the mood debuff is not that heavy.
helps a lot before trademoney really kicks.
