Be careful with forbidden zoning near homes. It may produce a warning that the house will soon be destroyed.
Yeah, I tried this, and found this was what eventuated... Fencing might have to be the way to go about it...
Have not tried it, but if fencing works, and produces no warnings or immediate destroying of houses, then I agree with you. What do I do ..... I don't bother with it. Just let your villagers walk through the yards of other villagers' homes.
The basic decorative fencing works if you block off all but one entrance to the yard, and only costs lumber, not gold...
I usually don't worry about people walking through the gardens of other houses because once you get to the Heavy Fortification Tier 3 density the gardens all turn into housing blocks anyway... But I do tend to group 4-6 houses with a fence so they all share 1 exit and it causes the paths to appear a bit less chaotic.
As for the resource cost of putting fences everywhere, a fun trick I learned. First as long as all the fences are close together you can do the entire city as one continuous object (like manor with many pieces) which makes it alot easier to add/remove/adjust them later...
More importantly you can PAUSE construction of the entire fence network with 1 button details window... And the "under construction" portions of the fence/gates will still properly block & redirect traffic. So you don't have to spend the resources on the fencing immediately for them to do their job, just commit the changes then pause construction until your ready to build them properly... or if you deplete your resources and want to take a break to work on something else.
1) Why are you letting houses degrade to the point where they disappear? As long as you don't remove the zoning for the area I don't think they ever devolve that far... or at least I have never had it happen (though i have gotten alerts when cropping residential zone & had to fix it)
2) How close are you putting the fencing to the housing plots? If your are actually putting it on the area they fence in with their yards than thats probobly the problem. If you look at what a full house looks like at max density it looks like the game expects the possibility to form a walking path around the entire outside perimeter of the housing plot.
As long as I have left at least that much space from the edge of the plot to the fence, I have never had any issues getting a house to re-spawn when I have had to destroy them & let them respawn. I have had to do this a few times when they build one at the far end of a zone first & the path that gets established in the area prevents the houses closer to the gate from spawning properly... I just delete the offending house & forbid the area until the path goes away, then try again. Never had to replace the fencing (and yes I fence in my residential areas before spawning houses... most of the time anyway)
I end up with more problems of them not filling the housing after heavy fortification upgrades because I just can't cram anymore jobs within walking distance of the older city blocks :P
Yes. You have to be meticulous and careful with placing. The game will let you know if a villager can't go somewhere and you'll have to make an adjustment. Unfortunately it is a bit time consuming.
