I also have an area enclosed by stone walls. Apparently that heavy fortification is enough. No patrols needed.
However, if you do not upgrade your citizens to commoner or above, you don't need watchtowers.
Try to collect all your higher level citizens within a walled area. That makes it so much easier to take care of their later needs.
Yeah you can cover a lot of arey by watchtowers, and later they offer heavy fortification. I use them often for gaps in my fortification through other towers.
It is just an alternative option if you so wish to use
As far as i am concerned, this game is all about cosmetics.
If I want balanced meaningful gameplay I play something else.
