Theres only 1 way...build the new wall AROUND the old one, then remove the old one.
As for Ninjafroggie.... This is a GAME not real life.
Right now the easiest way is to clip new wall into the old, and when the new one is done, delete the old one.
For me it would not. I had to tare down a small 2 inch piece of wall to add a gate and it used 3/4 of the downgrade timer. Had I wanted to build the whole wall after tearing down the existing wall all houses would have devolved. I don't play like you, so your way is not a one way works for all.
Once the dev adds in this one button wonder if you don't like it you need not use it, go ahead and continue to tear down your wall to replace it in a rush against the clock and enjoy and I'm glad it works for you but it will not work if the walls length is of a substantial size. I don't know how long it took my builders to originally build my walls but it had to be between 10 and 20 minutes of only building the walls and gates with nothing else on order to be built in the town and it was way past the devolving count down timer. So all my homes would be primordial ooze by the time they finished
The walls with heavy fortification also count as light fortification if linked with the old wall, so you can just edit a part of the wall, wait until it is finished, then upgrade the next part. If you give the wall priority when building it, as long as you have enough materials and builders, it finishes before the houses lose their protection so they don´t downgrade.
If houses start downgrading because of the replacement of a wall then it is simply a mistake on the players side. Made that mistake myself. Multiple times. Happens.
I mean, sure, it would be nice if you could just click on an upgrade button for a part of the wall instead of having to delete and then build a new wall, would save a few clicks, but it wouldn´t change a thing for houses, because the wall would still need to be rebuild and they would lose the fortification until the wallparts are finished.
