When you click on one of your workplaces there's a little green circle you can mouse over and it'll only be partially filled if the current workers are unqualified. So you can use that to check.

Comoners or citizens will need more time to fulfill all their needs, therefore spend less time working.
That kindof makes them less efficient.
This is how it works:
A serf will walk home, pick up 2 food, go to church, drink and back to work again.
A Citizen instead will walk home, pick up 3 food, go to church, pick up luxuries and comon wares, drink AND go to the tavern, then gets back to work.
Therefore a citizen will spend less time actively working, compared to a serf.
The game counters this loss of available working time with production boosts to certain jobs using the correct type of citizen
If you look at which jobs are for which group of ppl, you will notice that kindof all the "long distance" jobs including a lot of travel (farming/hunting/fishing etc) time are meant for serf,
more stationary ones like bakers, weavers etc. are ment for higher class citizens.
You tend to have those "lesser jobs" further out of your city and the others rather centralised
@Grimtorn
Totally agree with you ,
That is why i have always uppgraded only the maker of building materials during the EA and
Minotorius ( a modder ) confirmed this way of playing...
But this time , on another thread , he put farms at it maximum level and promote the fours bakers to commoners..
Also , even you will notice than they works more quickly than the serfs, the bread production was "a pain " (french word ^^)still or if , the bakers are not at theirs maximum level of production...
