How do I reassign workers?
Just got the game and I'm literally stuck in the tutorial here. The game said to build a village center, a lumber camp, some housing, and a well. I don't have any stone for a well, but, I can get some with a miner camp. No problem! I build the necessary miner camp.

Nobody goes to work at the miner camp.

I try assigning workers, but I can't, because they're all already employed. I try to unassign workers, and get an hourglass icon over the workers saying they're "finishing up" for the next several hours, even though they're literally standing around doing nothing.

Okay, I manually assign someone to the camp. He doesn't go there. I unassign him from his existing berry-gathering task, manually. He also stands at the village center and does nothing.

I just tried again, same results. The villager's information says he is "finishing up" for the next hour and a half. He is also, simultaneously, listed as "unemployed" and "waiting for work". What is he finishing up? Is there just a two-hour cooldown on reassignment?

What am I missing? I feel like reassigning workers should be fairly basic so I must have missed some simple command?

When you un-assign someone, I usually wait until I "officially" see them showing as "unemployed" in the Book/Villagers book page, before I assign them to the new worker position. But you should not have to wait this long for them to go. Try hitting CTRL-SHIFT-R for a quick reload, and see if that helps after waiting a short while (but before doing this, do a manual save, just in case something goes wrong.)
this one's pretty simple actually. go to your royal book, click on the villager you want to reassign jobs for, then click their job tab, it'll open up all the available jobs and you can select exactly what you want that villager to do.

I think the OP is confirming that the villager has the official title of the new worker position, but is not going to the worksite to do their duty.

Thanks, I'll try that. I haven't gotten to the tutorial about a Royal Book yet I don't think.

I will try a reload. No need to save; I'm literally only in minute two of the tutorial. Lots of keyboard shortcuts that aren't explained, it seems.

If you have not reached the availability of the Book yet, then do it this way (recommendation) ...
Go to the worksite you want to fire the employee, and open up the info panel for that structure. Look at the employees there, and find the one you want to fire/remove from that position. Take a quick, note in your head, on their name. Fire them using the small red X button, next to their display picture. If you see a small "ghost" like image, they have not yet "left" there position completely. Wait for the ghost image to disappear. Once it's gone, find the villager and click on him/her, and confirm that it says the are "unemployed."

So, I did that, but he just sits in the Workshop doing nothing. No worries, there are no tasks for him to actually do. But he's still listed as "Finishing Up" even though he's unemployed and Waiting for Work.

So I try to reassign him as a Builder, and build the logging camp. He does nothing. I waited an hour of in-game time and he just stands behind the counter. He's listed as Builder, Waiting for Work. My logging camp is waiting for builder. So I am completely blocked from finishing the tutorial because he's taking up a slot and refuses to either build, or release the slot.

Very confused here, I appreciate any insight.

Okay, he finally vacated the building after fast forwarding for four in-game days. That feels really weird, considering he wasn't "finishing up" anything at all as I literally had no tasks. But, okay, if there's a four-day cooldown on unassigning workers now I know that at least!

Yeah I'm getting weird things like this, too. I had one worker stuck leaving and entering the logging camp over and over. I had to pause the logging camp and wait for a few in-game days before they were available again.

One thing I've noticed is you never want to assign/unassign people to/from jobs while the game is paused. This always seems to make weird things happen. If i make sure I'm at least at speed 1 when doing these things the game is stable and no one gets stuck.

Yeah, I'm seeing really weird behavior. I'm still in the tutorial, and I cannot get to 75% happiness. All of my people are 3/3 needs fulfilled except for one, who claims she does not have a house.

She is just standing in the Workshop, refusing to go to her house to rest. She has her own solo house, and has been standing there for two straight months. I let the game run in fast forward for two months and she just stands there doing nothing. I unassigned her and nope, she has 0 housing need fulfilled.

I think I'll probably refund for now and check in again on the game in a little bit.

Thanks all for trying to help though!
I have the same problem. A worker that I unassigned from the Builder's Workshop is at the same time waiting for work and finishing up. Eventually they vacated the place, but it took a very long time. I think it took until they went to their home to rest. It smells like a bug. I wonder if it's only restricted to the Builder's Workshop.

Not sure, but I can confirm that all of my stuck workers were, in fact, stuck in the Builder's Workshop (the first building).

I refunded since I was around 90 minutes. I really, really wanted to love this game so I'm going to check back in a while - hopefully this will be addressed or there will be a workaround posted.

For me the above workaround has fixed the problem, but it happens often enough that it really needs to be addressed, not requiring some obscure keyboard shortcut or it's going to cause a lot of dissapointed new players
