How Do Hunting Areas Work (Game Mechanics)
I am struggling to understand how the boars and hunting areas work. They seem to deplete very quickly and not come back.

Anyone know what the game mechanics are for this? Is there a certain amount of space? Are we supposed to pause hunting periodically?

Yeah, I had the same issue. It seems broken if it's a finite resource but I didn't see any way to replenish them (like with the forester).

So here's what I've noticed regarding hunting areas. You need a forested area where there isn't other activity going on besides your hunters. Unlock a zone away from trade paths and other villager activity with a good sized forest in it, and don't zone it for chopping. You can reforest an area if absolutely need be, but having the forest already there will give you a massive head start. The boars will respawn over time, depending on your replenishment settings, the lower those are, the bigger hunting forest you're going to need.

I setup a large forested tile outside my village walls with a gate to allow the hunter to access their cabin at the edge, and soon enough I was trading excess meat to my trading partner.

Based on what I am seeing so far, what you have unlocked is important (your territory). I had a huge forest with boars but only owned a small portion of that forest. They wouldn't replenish, so it appears you need to have a large forested area **and that area all needs to be unlocked to be considered replenishable. In general respawn rate of the boars is low, but going to give it another shot.
